Dr. Sarah Khan will be discussing her research, ‘Pre-Analysis Plan Women’s Action Committees and Local Services in Pakistan’ (Dr. Ali Cheema, Dr. Sarah Khan, Dr. Shandana Khan Mohmand, Dr. Soledad Artiz Prillaman), on Day 3 of Pathways to Development 2024. 🔎 Paper Session 10: Gender, Development and Social Change 🕜 12:00pm - 2:00pm 📍 Lahore University of Management Sciences The paper delves into IDEAS research collected during the EGAP Metaketa V: Women’s Action Committees and Local Services. The project studies ways to develop women’s collective efficacy for local political participation in Pakistan. The study is being conducted as part of a set of five coordinated field experiments across Kyrgyzstan, Malawi, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Vietnam through the EGAP Metaketa V initiative. The common treatment implemented across all countries involves a set of facilitated trainings delivered to women’s groups aimed to increase their gender-based collective efficacy. The Pakistan arm of the project aims to study the effect of training delivered to women aimed at removing psycho-social barriers to political participation. The project will study whether such training improves women’s political participation outcomes. 🔎 Visit the ‘EGAP Metaketa V: Women’s Action Committees and Local Services’ project page on the IDEAS website to learn more: https://lnkd.in/eJfkdBCr

#WOMENOFUP: INTRIGUED BY RESEARCH PROBLEMS Prof Sonali Das, an established researcher and statistician in the Department of Business Management in the UP Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences, has employed inventive strategies to achieve her professional goals. She used her unique strategies to transition from a principal researcher role at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) to academia. After five years as an academic at the University of Pretoria , she was promoted to full Professor in January this year. She holds a C2-rating from The National Research Foundation of South Africa (NRF). Her research interests are diverse. She has explored everything from housing prices in South Africa to using Cape fynbos for fire management in Mediterranean-climate shrublands. Last year, she led a project on artificial intelligence and climate change information needs in Africa. Regardless of the research focus, Prof Das’ ultimate goal is to use her work to find solutions to real-world problems. “Although I’m a statistician, what intrigues me is a problem. “I want to convince myself that it is indeed a problem. Why is it a problem? Who does it matter to? What kind of data is associated with this problem? That data and the process of data collection should point me to a certain statistical methodology to propose a solution,” she says. I am both proud and humbled to announce that I have co-authored this publication on the critical issue of #vulnerable #researchparticipants with esteemed co-authors Prof #ChiekoKurihara, Prof #DirceuGreco, Prof #AmesDhai and Prof #KotoneMatsuyama. This work underscores the importance of #ethical inclusion and #equitable sharing of #benefits in research to promote #diversity and protect those who are vulnerable. It is a privilege to contribute to this meaningful discourse and to advocate for the rights and well-being of vulnerable populations in the research community. The #vulnerability of research #participants is a critical issue for the 2024 revision of the #Declaration of Helsinki, with the proposal to include "#social value. "This paper seeks to clarify: (1) the recent reform for the ethical inclusion of vulnerable research participants to promote diversity; (2) social value, a prerequisite for all, especially for those who are vulnerable and most in need; (3) the requirements for promoting the inclusion of vulnerable participants, in particular the review of norms for placebo-controlled trials and post-trial access; (4) finally, the direction of research ethics reform to achieve social value and equitable global health. https://lnkd.in/dKQzQSkt #ethics #vulnerable #researchparticipants #diversity #DeclarationofHelsinki #IFAPP

In November 2020, the Africa CDC established the Health Economics Programme (HEP) with a core mandate of providing technical analytic health economics support to African CDC priority areas, including national and continental level health systems. To achieve this, three main strategic pillars were identified and adopted: Following from the above, the HEP proposed an establishment of Regional Health Economics, Policy, and Systems (RHEPS) Centres/Hubs in Ghana and Rwanda which are expected to evolve and develop into regional hubs to strengthen in-country and regional capacity for generating, synthesizing and use of health economics and financing evidence in healthcare resource allocation decisions and policy. The RHEPS Centres are expected to work in collaboration with their respective Ministries of Health in both countries to ensure that the evidence produced is responsive to the policymakers’ evidence needs and relevant to their decision context which in turn will enhance evidence uptake in policy-making.

We live in challenging times, and the Pathways to Development Conference offers a critical convening space for academics, policymakers, and practitioners to engage with urgent regional issues. Over the past two years, this conference has been a vital platform for local and international audiences to share innovative work and ideas, creating collaboration opportunities often absent in our current landscape. While universities and academic institutions abroad frequently offer opportunities to network and present research, such platforms are limited locally. This conference is our attempt to bridge that gap—creating a space for local and international, early and senior, multidisciplinary scholars to connect, share their work, and foster meaningful dialogue. With over 50 speakers from 44 universities and organizations, this year's conference, held from December 16-18, 2024, at LUMS, will explore governance and inclusion with a particular focus on climate justice, public health, education, digitization, vulnerabilities and resilience in the South Asian region. Entry is free, but registration is required. If you’re in Lahore, join us and be part of this important conversation. Visit path2dev.org for more details and to register.
