Press Release Law and Justice Commission of Pakistan (LJCP) and Legal Aid Society (LAS) Formalize Strategic Partnership to Enhance Mediation and Judicial Efficiency in Pakistan Islamabad, August 22, 2024 – The Law and Justice Commission of Pakistan (LJCP) has formalized a two-year strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Legal Aid Society (LAS) to lead the development of an advanced mediation framework in Pakistan. This initiative is designed to institutionalize Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) mechanisms, to help address the backlog of over 2 million pending cases and expediting justice for citizens. The MoU has been signed at the LJCP Secretariat at Islamabad by Ms. Riffat Inam Butt, Secretary of LJCP, and Barrister Haya Emaan Zahid, CEO of the Legal Aid Society. Under the newly launched project called COMPASS, LJCP and LAS will drive critical capacity-building measures which include training of 1,000 judges in court-annexed mediation processes, accrediting 200 judges as mediators, and developing 2,000 lawyers as mediation advocates. Furthermore, five model court-annexed mediation centers will be established across various provinces to set a national benchmark for mediation practices. This strategic partnership marks a significant leap forward in enhancing judicial efficiency and ensuring timely access to justice for all citizens of Pakistan.

Law and Justice Commission of Pakistan Takes Historic Strides in Arbitration Law Reform: In a historic endeavor to modernize Pakistan's legal framework, the Law and Justice Commission of Pakistan (LJCP) has led a national effort to introduce arbitration into the country's legal system. Today, Law and Justice Commission of Pakistan under the able guidance of the Hon’ble Senior Puisne Judge, Supreme Court of Pakistan, Syed Mansoor Ali Shah while addressing the deficiencies in the legal framework of Arbitration Act, 1940 presented draft legislation “The Arbitration Bill, 2024” to the Federal Minister for Law and Justice to place before the Parliament. Today consultative workshop “Rethinking & Reshaping Arbitration Law in Pakistan,” marked the culmination of the efforts as the proposed legislation aims to promote efficiency and fairness in resolving commercial and business disputes. The consultative workshop on “Rethinking & Reshaping Arbitration Law in Pakistan,” was organized by the Law and Justice Commission of Pakistan, which was held on 2nd May 2024 in the Federal Judicial Academy, Islamabad.
