The main challenge of the #Queenproject is to reduce the EU’s dependence on MG-Si imports, a crucial material for the technology industry and #sustainability goals. Currently, China provides more than 80% of the European demand. This strategy has the potential to transform any quartz quarry in the EU into a source of MG-Si, boosting local production, #innovation, and sustainable practices. Additionally, the technologies developed during the project could be adapted to other materials, further expanding its impact. With a budget of €7,294,162.27 and a duration of 48 months, Queen aims to cover 56% of the EU’s MG-Si demand by 2032. Besides reducing import dependence, the project plans to recover more than 300 million tonnes of MG-Si from sands and save 232 billion tonnes of CO.
