  • Inquired, Part 4 Dear all, The BCO Conference 2024 in Hamburg was characterized by highly interesting presentations and podium discussions on current topics such as digitization, market development and sustainability. To visualize and deepen the content presented there, we have launched the new series "Inquired at", in which our speakers will once again present their key messages and content in short interviews at weekly intervals. This week we look back at the presentation by Dave van Diggele, Program Lead Shippers at Digital Container Shipping Association (DCSA). For more information see his presentation, which is also placed on the member portal. Your shiftX team #shiftX #BCOConference

  • 𝗕𝗖𝗢 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰: 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗴𝗼𝗮𝗹 The digital transformation of the supply chain is also an absolute priority for beneficial cargo owners (BCOs). However, the motivation of the players varies greatly. This is shown by a digital survey of around 110 participants at this year’s BCO Conference, conducted by the organizer shiftX GmbH. For almost half of the participants, “Providing better data as a basis for better decision-making” is the most important goal when digitizing their supply chain. “Accurate planning, combined with a better forecast”, is a priority for 23 percent in the context of digitization, closely followed by “Access to real-time data” (22 percent). Far fewer participants voted for “Cost transparency” (5 percent). For all players, there is no doubt about the need to digitize processes and workflows. This was impressively underlined by the BCO Conference. However, when it comes to the question of “how”, opinions are often still divided, which is also due to the complexity of the task. We therefore wanted to know what challenges BCOs face in the transformation process. The result is clear: for 46 percent, volatility in pricing is the top priority, followed by increasing lead and transit times (31 percent). Far behind are “Access to capacity to avoid lost sales” and “De-risking by expanding sourcing markets.” At the next BCO Conference 2025, we will once again conduct a survey among the participants and reach out to you in advance to gather your current questions and topics of interest as a BCO. • Dear all, The BCO Conference 2024 in Hamburg was characterized by highly interesting presentations and podium discussions on current topics such as digitalization, market development and sustainability. To visualize and deepen the content presented there, we have launched the new series "Inquired", in which our speakers will once again present their key messages and content in short interviews at weekly intervals. Jan Tiedemann will kick-off the series. Jan is Senior Analyst at Alphaliner, the worlds leading provider of data and market intelligence for the liner industry, and part of AXSMarine. In his presentation "𝗟𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗿 𝗦𝗵𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 - 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘁𝘂𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀" he gave us interesting insights into the current status and further developments of the container und sea freight market. “𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗱𝗶𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝗶𝗻 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱.” 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗱𝗿𝗮𝘄 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝗯𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿? In general, we have seen further market growth in the current year. In the three areas of global container fleet (7.117 active cargo ships in the container trades), fleet capacity (30.86 Mteu) and vessel orderbook capacity (7.76 Mteu), we are recording historic record figures. Year-on-year growth is also up by more than 10% compared to the previous year. The bottom line is that 2024 can be considered a successful year, especially from the shipping companies' perspective. 𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗷𝗼𝗿 𝗯𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘁𝗵? It is difficult to say, as economic success is measured by various factors. However, the ten global shipping companies that have joined forces in the three alliances 2M Agreement, Ocean Alliance and THE Alliance with an overall market share of more the 86 percent, are certainly among the biggest beneficiaries with core margins up to 20 percent in the first half of 2024 alone. But, however, it is questionable if this trend will continue in the coming years. This is because freight rates have returned to pre-Covid levels, but costs have risen significantly in comparison. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗺𝘀? In fact, shipping companies are currently facing several challenges. Take the situation in the Red Sea: due to the threat posed by the Hutis, most ships are choosing the longer route via the Cape of Good Hope. This is safe, but costs two weeks of additional transit times. In addition, there are delays due to slow steaming or delays in port clearance, for example due to strikes. Ships often must wait days for clearance. Times when the ships are not available. Of course, this costs the owner hard cash. #BCOConference #shiftX #Digitalization

It is well known that they suffer greatly from limited capacities of skilled labour, means of transport capacities and infrastructure. This became clear once again a few days ago at the #SynLOG Day in Schwerte/Germany. The opening presentation by Stephan Schiller and Antonios Rigalos, managing partners of XSTAFF GmbH, showed that working solutions are often not that far away, but are already being successfully implemented: Using nature as a model, namely in the form of a school of fish. It is no coincidence that this is synonymous with #XSTAFF: All partners move together, purposefully and harmoniously towards a common goal. Translated, this means that the powerful alliance of cooperating Beneficial Cargo Owners (BCO) has relied on cooperative structures and a collaborative approach to freight purchasing since it was founded in 2016 - which, according to Stephan Schiller, not only works in nature, but also in business: “#XSTAFF is the best example of this. Together we are simply stronger, without our members having to restrict their independence - just like the fish in a school.” In addition to the high level of consulting expertise of the employees, the international network of logistics partners and innovative IT solutions, the consistent implementation of key business principles such as reliability, predictability, transparency and honesty are also important building blocks for the #XSTAFF #BCO member companies. According to Antonios Rigalos, the current nomination compliance rate is 99.2 percent. “Even in such turbulent times as we are currently experiencing, #XSTAFF is and will remain a reliable and collegial partner, both for our members and for our network partners,” Rigalos and Schiller promised the participants at the #SynLOG day in conclusion. Finally, on behalf of #XSTAFF, many thanks to the organizers from #SynLOG, the Home and Garden Manufacturers' Association e.V.  and the Garden Industry Association e.V. for the successful event. #XSTAFF #SynLOG #BCO 𝘊𝘳𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘵𝘴 𝘐𝘮𝘢𝘨𝘦: 𝘙𝘔 𝘙𝘶𝘥𝘰𝘭𝘧 𝘔𝘶̈𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘳 𝘔𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘦𝘯 / 𝘔𝘢𝘳𝘬𝘶𝘴 𝘏𝘰𝘸𝘦𝘴𝘵
