It was a busy month of Simulator training for me. I kicked things off with my own B787 recurrent simulator session, followed by several #RPAS simulated flights in a new area we plan to operate in a few weeks. The team and I collaborated on developing potential flight paths, but we also wanted to test some proposed changes to our failsafe systems and autopilot behavior before flying them for real. The challenge was that we didn’t have access to the same autopilot firmware on our simulator as we do with our #SentaeroBVLOS (yes, it does actually matter). Fortunately, SIMNET: Drone Design and Simulation Powered by the Cloud has been an incredible partner over the years. I reached out to them with our issue, and Juan Cruz-Ayoroa / AJ Cruz-Ayoroa promptly provided us with an updated aircraft featuring the correct firmware in our SIMNET Workspace. With this new capability, we conducted several simulated missions to evaluate the different autopilot behaviors in question. These simulated flights significantly boosted our confidence in our flight planning process and confirmed various redundancies that we hope to never need. That’s the importance of training. 🚀 Model. Simulate. Iterate. Elevate. 🚀 🛠️ Bringing our designs to life requires more than just engineering expertise—it takes the right tools to validate our prototypes early in the development process and effectively. 💡 With SIMNET: Drone Design and Simulation Powered by the Cloud, we could accurately model our prototype, simulate it in realistic 3D environments, integrate a wide range of flight control software, and analyze flight performance to fine-tune our design and flight parameters, long before physical testing. 🦺 This helped us detect potential issues early, streamline the journey from concept to testing, and save significant time, cost, and effort—all while safeguarding our drones. Their intuitive interface and professional support have been instrumental in pushing our designs further. 🙏 Huge thanks to our sponsor, SIMNET, for empowering us to take our prototypes to the next level! 🔗 Check them out: https://simnet.aero/ #simulation #engineering #drone #prototyping #innovation #teamwork #testing

The 3D printed trainer aircraft shown in the picture was designed, printed, and assembled in just a couple of days, using widely-accessible web-based design tools and standard FDM 3D printers. Thanks to new foaming PLA materials, the airframe is similar in weight to more traditional foam materials, and costs just around $10 to manufacture. We have released a workshop video in collaboration with PTC and Cal State LA College of ECST demonstrating how you can design a customized fixed-wing drone using SIMNET: Drone Design and Simulation Powered by the Cloud, then exporting the model to Onshape, a PTC Technology for detailed structural design, and finally 3D printing. This was done as part of our sponsorship for the upcoming 2025 3D-Printed Fixed-Wing Aircraft (C-3DPAC) and California Unmanned Aerial Systems Competition (C-UASC) competitions at Cal State LA. The workshop videos cover: 1. Using SIMNET Designer to auto-generate a baseline aircraft model based on design requirements and constraints. 2. Customize and optimize the baseline design, integrating aerodynamics, power system, weight and balance, construction materials, and flight controls considerations. 3. Fly the simulated aircraft to predict and tune the flight characteristics. 4. Export as a CAD file to Onshape. 5. From Onshape, create a detailed 3D-printable structure for the trainer aircraft. Message us if you’re interested in incorporating this process into your academic institution’s coursework, labs or capstone projects. A special thanks to Michael Thorburn from Cal State LA for organizing the event and facilitating the sponsorship, and to Matthew Mueller from PTC for creating the excellent video tutorial based on our sample trainer aircraft. Over the past year, the UDC lab has been able to explore a variety of innovative projects, and two of these UAV projects required simulation and testing that were made using SIMNET Aero, a browser-based cloud modeling and simulation platform. These projects really highlight how the tool has been instrumental to our work. 📌 ICMTC - UAV Challenge: The simulation capabilities were essential for optimizing the design before the aircraft ever got off the ground. 📌 Distributed Propulsion Tailsitter E-VTOL graduation project: The simulation of complex takeoff dynamics was challenging in physical testing alone. A significant part of our progress in these aircraft projects has been thanks to SIMNET Aero, as the modeling tools made it easy for us to iterate on designs, while the autonomous and manual simulation capabilities allowed us to thoroughly test our aircraft in different scenarios via integrating SIMNET Aero with PX4 and QGroundControl. Overall, the diverse features and user-friendly interface have been a game-changer for us at the UDC Lab. We're excited to continue leveraging this great tool as we take on new innovative projects in the future. ✈️ SIMNET: Drone Design and Simulation Powered by the Cloud #UDC #WhereIdeasTakeOff #UDC24 #SIMNETAero #Simulation #AircraftDynamics #AircraftControl #Modeling #Autonomous #UAVs #RCPlanes #Drones
