Meet Catarina Marreiros, a PhD student who joined our team in 2021 and is now in her fourth year of Biomedical Sciences. She is pioneering research on a novel biomarker for assessing cardiovascular risk—the Gla-Rich Protein (GRP), a vitamin K-dependent protein with significant potential as an indicator of cardiovascular health. Catarina’s innovative work within our Functional Biochemistry and Proteomics (FBP) group has been recognized with the BINOV 2024 Prize in the Pharmaceutical Intervention category by the Ordem dos Farmacêuticos. We are immensely proud of Catarina’s achievements and the impactful strides her research is making in the fight against cardiovascular disease.

Antarctic algae and cyanobacteria are primary producers at the base of marine food webs with fundamental ecological functions. However, their species number is probably underestimated and their survival strategies remain largely unknown. This seminar will discuss the results from the exploration of Antarctic flora during the Italian scientific expeditions to the Ross Sea, focusing on the description of new species, their metabolomes and their potential applications.

🌟 CCMAR Inspires Returns with a Bang! 🌟 A heartfelt thank you to Professor António Coutinho for his thought-provoking insights into the intersection of science, politics, and biomedicine. 🔬💡 Focusing particularly on cancer treatment, Professor Coutinho emphasized the urgent need for a paradigm shift in research. Instead of concentrating solely on cancerous cells, he advocates for an organism-centered approach. This perspective highlights the importance of viewing the patient as a whole system, with research addressing the complex interplay of factors within the body. 👩🔬👨🔬 Professor Coutinho also called on senior researchers to actively pave the way for young scientists, whose creativity and fresh perspectives are vital for advancing the field.
