🎄 Advent Calendar: It's time to open door number #23- The concept of #falls #efficacy in older adults 🔗 Click here to open a new door: https://lnkd.in/dtjVm_2r 👉 #Falls and #fall-related injuries continue to be a significant health concern for older adults, often leading to a decline in physical function, independence, and overall quality of life. 👉 In response to this, the World Guidelines for Falls Prevention and Management emphasize the importance of not only reducing the physical risks of falling but also addressing the psychological and emotional aspects. 🔑 One key yet often overlooked factor in fall prevention is #fallsefficacy —the belief in one’s ability to prevent or manage falls. ✅ A recent commentary on these #guidelines explores how #falls efficacy directly influences older adults' decision-making and behaviors, impacting whether they take action to prevent falls or avoid activities that could reduce their risk. 🚶♀️💪 ✅ The commentary highlights that falls efficacy is not just about an individual’s confidence in preventing falls but also about their perceived ability to handle various aspects of a fall. For example, older adults might feel confident in their ability to walk steadily but may not believe they can recover from a fall or get up from the ground afterward. ✅ As the global population ages, the number of older adults with low falls efficacy is likely to rise. 🌍 By 2050, one in four people will be 60 years or older, with 80% residing in low- and middle-income countries. This demographic shift could result in increased physical frailty, a higher risk of falls, and loss of independence. ✅ According to the commentary, a multidimensional approach to falls efficacy would enable practitioners to tailor interventions by leveraging four key sources of self-efficacy: performance accomplishments (or enactive mastery), vicarious experience, social or verbal persuasion, and emotional and physiological states. These sources can help motivate individuals to successfully engage in progressively challenging activities, ultimately enhancing their ability to manage and prevent falls. #FallsPrevention #FallsEfficacy #HealthyAging #SeniorHealth #FallPrevention #PhysicalActivity 📑 Reference: Soh, Shawn Leng Hsien et al. “About Falls Efficacy: A commentary on "World guidelines for falls prevention and management for older adults: a global initiative".” Journal of frailty, sarcopenia and falls vol. 9,4 281-285. 1 Dec. 2024, doi:10.22540/JFSF-09-281

🎄 Advent Calendar: It's time to open door number #22- #Frailty, #sarcopenia, and #falls 🔗 Click here to open a new door: https://lnkd.in/dtjVm_2r 🌏 The World Guidelines for Falls Prevention and Management for Older Adults highlight the strong connection between #falls and #geriatric #syndromes like #frailty and #sarcopenia. Both conditions significantly increase the risk of falls, and early identification, along with targeted interventions like exercise and nutrition, can help reduce fall-related injuries and improve overall health and independence for older adults. ➡️ Frailty is a state of increased vulnerability to stressors and significantly increases the risk of falls. #Frail individuals are more likely to experience recurrent falls. Around 15% of adults aged 65 and older are frail, with the prevalence rising to over 25% for those aged 85+ 👵👴. ➡️ Frailty doubles the risk of recurrent falls and is linked to more severe outcomes, including hip fractures 🦵. Clinicians are encouraged to use frailty as a marker in fall risk stratification. ➡️ Sarcopenia, characterized by the loss of muscle mass and strength, is another key contributor to fall risk. It is often associated with low physical activity and worsens the likelihood of falls among older adults. A study found that 25% of individuals aged 80+ are affected by sarcopenia, and those with sarcopenia are three times more likely to fall during a 2-year period 🏃♀️⚠️. 🏥 An increasing number of clinicians and researchers are emphasizing the need to diagnose and treat sarcopenia, especially in older adults at higher risk of falls. Early detection and management are seen as key to preventing falls and improving health. #FallsPrevention #Frailty #Sarcopenia #OlderAdults #FallRisk #GeriatricSyndromes 📖 Reference: Montero-Odasso M, van der Velde N, Martin FC, et al. 🎄 Advent Calendar: It's time to open door number #21 – #WGFPM and its #algorithm for risk stratification 🔗 Click here to open a new door: https://lnkd.in/dtjVm_2r The World Guidelines for Falls Prevention and Management for Older Adults introduced an algorithm for #risk #stratification, #assessment, and intervention that categorizes older adults into three groups based on their #fallrisk: low, intermediate, and high. 👉 This approach ensures that older adults at #lowrisk are offered general education and exercise for overall health and fall prevention 🏋️♂️, while those at #intermediaterisk are provided with targeted exercise and may be referred to a physiotherapist 🧑⚕️ to improve #balance and #musclestrength. 👉 Older adults at high risk should undergo a multifactorial falls risk assessment to guide individualized interventions tailored to their specific needs. 👉The algorithm includes two main entry points: opportunistic case-finding (asking about falls during health visits) and when older adults seek healthcare services after a fall or related-injury 🏥. Opportunistic case-finding is crucial as many older adults may not report falls spontaneously or may not remember the timing of previous falls ⏳. Clinicians are strongly advised to ask older adults about their fall history, at least once a year, to ensure that appropriate interventions are offered 🗣️. For those at #highrisk, the multifactorial assessment examines multiple domains, including #gait and #balance, medications, vision and hearing, #musculoskeletal health, and functional ability to identify factors that contribute to fall risk 📊. #FallsPrevention #RiskStratification #FallRiskAssessment #OlderAdults #FallPrevention #Guidelines 📖 Reference: Montero-Odasso M, van der Velde N, Martin FC, et al. 🎄 Advent Calendar: It's time to open door number #20- How WGFPM should be used? 🔗 Click here to open a new door: https://lnkd.in/dtjVm_2r The World Guidelines for Falls Prevention and Management for Older Adults (#WGFPM) provide a comprehensive and flexible framework for preventing and managing falls among older adults 👵👴. These guidelines were designed to help healthcare professionals 👩⚕️👨⚕️, including physicians, nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, pharmacists, and other allied health professionals, assess and manage fall risks, according to each individual’s unique needs. Collaboration across healthcare professions is key to the successful application of these guidelines 🤝. While specialist healthcare professionals play an important role 🩺, non-specialist providers are also key players in falls prevention and management 🚶♂️. The approach recommended by the guidelines includes predictive tools 📊 to assess risk, preventative strategies 🛑 to reduce the likelihood of falls, and personalized interventions 📝 that address specific risk factors for each older adult. The guidelines also emphasize a participatory model 🙋♂️🙋♀️, encouraging healthcare providers to work with older adults and their caregivers 👨👩👧👦 to set goals 🎯 and develop fall prevention plans that align with their preferences, values, and resources 💡. #FallsPrevention #OlderAdults #HealthCareCollaboration #PersonCenteredCare #AgingWithDignity #FallPrevention #GlobalHealth #RiskStratification #HealthcareGuidelines 👵👴 📖 Reference: Montero-Odasso M, van der Velde N, Martin FC, et al.
