It is always great to celebrate success! (And how success is defined/measured/valued is very important!). This afternoon, at Oeiras International School, we did just that! Again! We held the annual #MYP Certificate Ceremony to honour the students who finished their MYP a journey have embarked on the next chapter of the #IB #Continuum: the #DP! Super proud of these young people! This year we created the “Kurt Hahn, there is more in you than you know” (“plus est en vous”) award. I think it might be my new favourite award! Highlighting and showcasing that awe that lies within people, who often don’t realise it is there! This year, the student who won (and unfortunately couldn’t come to receive the award) is one of “those” students who brings nothing but joy to those around him, who worked as hard as he possibly could, and embraced the support of those around him, and achieved more than he thought he was able to achieve! I remain SO proud of this young man, and all of the adults who never gave up on believing in him. Francisco, plus est en vous!! Well done!!!!! We cannot wait for our students to return on Monday!
We spent the first full week back at Oeiras International School with the whole team getting ready for our students’ return on Monday. We had sessions engaging with colleagues on how to embark on the Council of International Schools accreditation and International Baccalaureate evaluation self-studies, time working in various pastoral/wellbeing and academic teams, building lockers, cleaning corridors, completing the final finishing touches on all of the amazing improvements to our facilities, welcoming our new families to their new home, reconnecting with each other and catching up on what people had done over the holidays, recent graduates running on-site childcare for staff with children (soooo proud of the way they looked after them), and then enjoying a wonderful boat trip, to (quite literally) on-board our new colleagues with those who were also able to join us on the beautiful Tejo river to soak up the stunning sites our capital city has to offer us. What a week! And now, everything is absolutely ready for the new academic year, and Term 1, to begin on Monday! I love my colleagues - but schools without students always feel like something is missing. When they come back, it will all feel just right again. Today we welcomed the nine new members of the #OIS team. With #colleagues joining us from schools in #Dubai, #Armenia, and #Portugal, "coming from" #Ireland, Portugal, #Spain, the #UnitedKingdom, and the #UnitedStatesofAmerica. We are thrilled to have such a highly qualified (and friendly, lovely, kind, clever, learning focussed, professional...) group of people joining the OIS #team. We have spent one day helping them begin their on-boarding and adaptation to change process here before returning staff come back to school on Monday. It is wonderful to see #relationships continuing to grow following our profound recruitment process. If you’d like to see OIS’s Principal whizzing along on our newly installed zip line in our exciting new playground, here is a little snapshot into the work that has been done over the summer. We won’t show anything else as we want it to be a surprise for our students when they come back on the 2nd September. 😊
And, just like that, another academic year begins! This summer has not been the summer of holidays and disconnect that one expects. But it has been a summer of #excitement as our #campus finally gets a major #overhaul with #love, #care, #dedication and #commitment. A brand new #playground (that features a zip line), the #palace has been #repainted, the White Building has had the floors stabilised, walls and ceilings redone, new #lockers are on their way, the list goes on…and on…and on…! Being able to #invest so heavily to #improve our internal and external #facilities in this way will have a #wonderful #impact on the #learning and #teaching #experiences of our #students and #staff. And equally importantly, recreational time can have more focus on playing for those who might not want to use a ball or to sit down to chill out with their friends. (I’ve already played in the playground - with quite a few colleagues already - and I felt like a child again!). Thank you to Paulo Afonso Assunção for #leading this immense project and for making sure it will be ready before the students return. 🥇 (And thank you to the Board for their work and support with this project!). With our Council of International Schools accreditation and International Baccalaureate re-evaluation processes starting in earnest this year, we will have a busy time digging deep into what we do well and what we need to improve. And I can’t think of a better, more #professional, team of #colleagues to do this with than the #team at Oeiras International School! Looking forward to what this year will bring, to the new beginnings for #families and #colleagues joining our #community, to the #relationships that will be built, and most importantly to the rich #learning that is about to take place! But first, to prepare breakfast at home for my most amazing of Senior Leadership Team colleagues and friends. (Jonathan Chambers, Gemma Montefiore, Jan W. Van Hees, Barbara Guimarães, Paula Candeias and Francisco Jose Vargas Fragosa).
