📜Master's thesis in Materials Engineering contributes to the development of a Multifunctional Nanoplatform of Graphene Oxide and Iron Oxides for the treatment of Cancer! 👩🏻🎓Beatriz Morgadinho, a student at the Campus Tecnológico e Nuclear, recently defended her master's thesis in Materials Engineering with an excellent classification of 18/20, under the supervision of professors and researchers Laura Pereira, from the C2TN - Centro de Ciências e Tecnologias Nucleares, at Instituto Superior Técnico, and Maria João Carmezim, from the Mechanics Department at ESTSetúbal / Instituto Politécnico de Setúbal. In her innovative work, entitled ‘Multifunctional iron oxide - graphene oxide nanoplatform for hyperthermia and magnetic targeted drug delivery’, Beatriz developed a new graphene oxide (GO) nanoplatform and superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs), from the synthesis, characterisation and optimisation of its properties in a first attempt to explore its potential in cancer treatment. This nanoplatform combines the magnetic properties of SPIONs with the high surface area and oxygen functional groups present in GO, with a view to applications in magnetic hyperthermia, photothermal therapy, magnetic resonance imaging and localised drug delivery. 🎓João Preto, a student at Campus Tecnológico e Nuclear, defended his Master's Dissertation in Chemical Engineering, achieving an impressive classification of 19/20! ⓘEntitled ‘T-MoMa: Therapeutic Molecular Materials - The Cation Effect on [Au(III) dcbdt2]- Salts’ Cytotoxicity’, the thesis was defended on 5th December and was supervised by researchers the Dulce Belo and Célia Fernandes from the @Departamento de Engenharia e Ciências Nucleares, at Instituto Superior Técnico. ➡️João's work focused on the synthesis and characterisation of bis-dithiolate gold complexes with different cations, with the aim of assessing the influence of the cation on the cytotoxicity of these compounds in ovarian cancer cells. 📣The defense of Joana Mendes Pereira's Master's Thesis in Molecular Sciences and Engineering, entitled ‘Separation of Thorium and Uranium Using Functionalized Ionic Liquids for Applications in the Thorium Nuclear Fuel Cycle’, took place on 29/11 at Instituto Superior Técnico. Her thesis was supervised by Leonor Maria, a researcher at the Centro de Química Estrutural (CQE), and Bernardo Monteiro, a researcher at the IPFN - Instituto de Plasmas e Fusão Nuclear. ⚛Joana's research work aimed to develop new methods for the selective separation of thorium and uranium, a crucial step for the reprocessing of nuclear fuel in thorium-based reactors. 👏Congratulations to Joana on her excellent final classification of 18/20! 🗣️The researcher Ana Luísa Rodrigues, head of the Luminescence Dating Laboratory, and senior technician Dulce Russo, both from the Department of Nuclear Engineering and Sciences and the C2TN - Centro de Ciências e Tecnologias Nucleares, Instituto Superior Técnico, were out in the field from 11st to 14th November with the team from the project ‘Estrategias de ocupación y gestión del territorio de las poblaciones neandertales en la zona central del mediterráneo ibérico’ (NESUBSTRA). The mission took place at Middle and Upper Palaeolithic sites in the regions of Valencia and Alicante, Spain. ➡️The project, funded by the Ministry of Science and Innovation of Spain, and led by Professor Aleix Eixea of the Universitat de València, aims to deepen knowledge about the occupation and mobility of Neanderthal populations in the Iberian Mediterranean during MIS 5 (130,000 - 80,000 years BP) and MIS 3 (59,000 - 24,000 years BP). During the mission, sediment samples were collected and 𝘪𝘯 𝘴𝘪𝘵𝘶 gamma dosimetry measurements were carried out in two important shelters: Cova Foradada (Oliva, Valencia) and Ratlla del Bubo (Crevillent, Alicante). 🗣Researchers from C2TN - Centro de Ciências e Tecnologias Nucleares, Instituto Superior Técnico, took part in the ‘XV Iberian Archaeometry Congress’, organised by the Geosciences Department of the Universidade de Aveiro and the Sociedad de Arqueometría Aplicada al Patrimonio Cultural, presenting research works on the characterisation and valorisation of cultural heritage. Rosa Marques, Ana Luísa Rodrigues and Susana Sousa Gomes discussed the application of micro-invasive and luminescence dating techniques, namely nuclear techniques, to unlock the secrets of materials and artefacts that are over a thousand years old! ⚗️A Magic of Chemistry: Exploring the Invisible World Around Us! Last week, two 2nd grade classes from Fanhões Primary School in Loures and António Rebelo de Andrade Primary School in Oeiras had the opportunity to explore the fascinating world of chemistry in a fun and interactive way! 👩🏻🔬Sandra Rabaça, a researcher at C2TN - Centro de Ciências e Tecnologias Nucleares, Instituto Superior Técnico, carried out experimental demonstrations that delighted the children. One of the most striking experiments was that of the balloons that inflate by themselves, allowing us to observe the formation of carbon dioxide and understand in practice how chemical reactions take place. Another captivating experiment was the secret message, which showed how compounds change when exposed to different conditions. 🔬43 students learnt fundamental concepts of chemistry, such as atoms, molecules and chemical reactions, connecting scientific knowledge to our everyday lives!
