👏Eduardo Ferreira is to be congratulated on the defense of his Master's Thesis in Engineering Physics! On 29th November, Eduardo defended his master's thesis on ‘Implementation of FISSIONIST's Safety Channels’, under the supervision of José Marques, a researcher at the C2TN - Centro de Ciências e Tecnologias Nucleares, and the co-supervision of Teresa Peña, a professor at Instituto Superior Técnico and researcher at Laboratório de Instrumentação e Física Experimental de Partículas, obtaining a remarkable classification of 19/20. ⚛️His work contributed to the construction of a nuclear reactor simulator that will provide Técnico with a new nuclear physics and engineering teaching laboratory. 🗣️The researcher Ana Luísa Rodrigues, head of the Luminescence Dating Laboratory, and senior technician Dulce Russo, both from the Department of Nuclear Engineering and Sciences and the C2TN - Centro de Ciências e Tecnologias Nucleares, Instituto Superior Técnico, were out in the field from 11st to 14th November with the team from the project ‘Estrategias de ocupación y gestión del territorio de las poblaciones neandertales en la zona central del mediterráneo ibérico’ (NESUBSTRA). The mission took place at Middle and Upper Palaeolithic sites in the regions of Valencia and Alicante, Spain. ➡️The project, funded by the Ministry of Science and Innovation of Spain, and led by Professor Aleix Eixea of the Universitat de València, aims to deepen knowledge about the occupation and mobility of Neanderthal populations in the Iberian Mediterranean during MIS 5 (130,000 - 80,000 years BP) and MIS 3 (59,000 - 24,000 years BP). During the mission, sediment samples were collected and 𝘪𝘯 𝘴𝘪𝘵𝘶 gamma dosimetry measurements were carried out in two important shelters: Cova Foradada (Oliva, Valencia) and Ratlla del Bubo (Crevillent, Alicante). 🗣Researchers from C2TN - Centro de Ciências e Tecnologias Nucleares, Instituto Superior Técnico, took part in the ‘XV Iberian Archaeometry Congress’, organised by the Geosciences Department of the Universidade de Aveiro and the Sociedad de Arqueometría Aplicada al Patrimonio Cultural, presenting research works on the characterisation and valorisation of cultural heritage. Rosa Marques, Ana Luísa Rodrigues and Susana Sousa Gomes discussed the application of micro-invasive and luminescence dating techniques, namely nuclear techniques, to unlock the secrets of materials and artefacts that are over a thousand years old! ⚗️A Magic of Chemistry: Exploring the Invisible World Around Us! Last week, two 2nd grade classes from Fanhões Primary School in Loures and António Rebelo de Andrade Primary School in Oeiras had the opportunity to explore the fascinating world of chemistry in a fun and interactive way! 👩🏻🔬Sandra Rabaça, a researcher at C2TN - Centro de Ciências e Tecnologias Nucleares, Instituto Superior Técnico, carried out experimental demonstrations that delighted the children. One of the most striking experiments was that of the balloons that inflate by themselves, allowing us to observe the formation of carbon dioxide and understand in practice how chemical reactions take place. Another captivating experiment was the secret message, which showed how compounds change when exposed to different conditions. 🔬43 students learnt fundamental concepts of chemistry, such as atoms, molecules and chemical reactions, connecting scientific knowledge to our everyday lives! 🎓On 19 November, Gonçalo Lopes defended his PhD Thesis in Chemistry entitled ‘Molecular Bilayer Conducting Systems Towards Chirality’ at Instituto Superior Técnico, under the supervision of Sandra Rabaça, researcher at C2TN - Centro de Ciências e Tecnologias Nucleares, with Manuel Almeida, coordinating researcher at C2TN and Departamento de Engenharia e Ciências Nucleares, and José António Paixão, professor and researcher at the Physics Centre of the University of Coimbra, as co-supervisors. The aim of his research was to develop new molecular materials, in particular to extend the family of molecular conductors in bilayers by introducing chirality to these systems. Gonçalo's work highlights the importance of these materials in the study of unconventional electrical and magnetic properties. With the introduction of chirality comes the possibility of observing the effect of electromagnetic chiral anisotropy (eMChA) in these molecular systems, thus opening up new perspectives for the development of Advanced Molecular Materials. 🔬An Adventure in the World of Proteins: Discovering New Forms through Science! The 9A class at Sebastião e Silva Secondary School in Oeiras had the unique opportunity to welcome researchers Bruno Oliveira and Rita Melo, from the C2TN - Centro de Ciências e Tecnologias Nucleares at Instituto Superior Técnico, to their classroom on 20th November. During the visit, the students learnt about the innovative use of radiopharmaceuticals in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases such as cancer. The creation of platforms that direct radiopharmaceuticals to target cells increases the effectiveness of treatment, reduces damage to healthy tissue and offers safer and more personalised approaches. 📢The 2nd edition of the ‘C2TN Workshop on Advanced Materials’ was a success and highlighted the latest scientific innovations in the field of advanced materials. Aimed at the national and international scientific community, the auditorium of the Campus Tecnológico e Nuclear, Instituto Superior Técnico, in Loures was the stage for a number of presentations of research work showing significant advances in various scientific areas, such as materials for health, thermoelectric, magnetic and molecular materials, as well as studies on the interaction of radiation with matter and the application of artificial intelligence in data analysis. ➔Among the innovations are the development of membranes with great potential for creating membranes to mimicking organs such as kidneys and lungs, improved energy efficiency in thermoelectric materials and progress in polymeric and composite materials with substantially improved mechanical and thermal properties. Students from the C2TN - Centro de Ciências e Tecnologias Nucleares at CERN/ISOLDE have obtained the first photoluminescence data with radiotracers (rPL), opening the door to applications in quantum technologies. 🗣️Yesterday, 19/11, we had the pleasure of having Joana Madureira, a researcher from the C2TN - Centro de Ciências e Tecnologias Nucleares, Instituto Superior Técnico, at Catujal Primary School in Loures. 🧪During her visit, Joana shared with the 8G and 9D classes the work carried out in the C2TN laboratory, highlighting the advantages of using ionising radiation technologies for a more sustainable environment. Joana explained to the 36 students that ionising radiation can be applied in a wide variety of areas, such as the preservation of fresh food, the treatment of waste water and the recovery of agro-industrial waste. ℹ️A session was held as part of the ‘Engineering and Science go to School’ initiative, promoted by Técnico in partnership with the Loures and Técnico Oeiras centres, with the support of several schools in the Lisbon, Loures and Oeiras Municipalities.
