Our first measurement campaign yielded remarkable outcomes, and we are pleased to present them! 🚀🚀 In this article, we first present and characterize three RIS prototypes with 100×100 unit cells of half-wavelength inter-cell spacing, which were optimized to offer a specific non-specular reflection with 1-, 2-, and 3-bit phase quantization at 304 GHz. The designed static RISs were considered in an indoor channel measurement campaign carried out with a 304 GHz channel sounder. Channel measurements for two setups, one focusing on the transmitter-RIS-receiver path gain and the other on the angular spread of multipath components, are presented and compared with both state-of-the-art theoretical models as well as full-wave simulation results. The article concludes with a list of challenges and research directions for RIS design and modeling of RIS-parameterized channels at THz frequencies. TERahertz ReconfigurAble METAsurfaces for ultra-high rate wireless communications
Sobre nós
The TERRAMETA consortium is comprised of 13 Institutions including universities, research centers, and companies, with more than 50 researchers associated with its activities, all working in the area of wireless communications under the common vision for 6G communications. This next-generation wireless paradigm will provide unprecedented levels of data transfer rates, reliability, connectivity, and coverage. TERRAMETA is at the forefront of the global 6G research & planning endeavor. Specifically, the project focuses on designing, manufacturing, and evaluating “meta-material” surfaces, similar to existing – but more advanced, wireless antennas, under the Terahertz (THz) bands (which, when deployed, will offer 1000’s of orders of magnitude higher bandwidth than the current 4G systems). Those surfaces act as reflectors, sensors, and/or (re-)transmitters of the wireless signals reaching them and can be deployed so as to intelligently control their reflection patterns in real-time (thanks to sophisticated signal processing or AI-based algorithms running in their internal controllers) in order to optimize the wireless system and provide the best possible quality of service to the users with minimal costs on the end of wireless operators. The TERRAMETA project has received funding from the Smart Networks and Services Joint Undertaking (SNS JU) under the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme under Grant Agreement No 101097101, including top-up funding by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) under the UK government’s Horizon Europe funding guarantee. Views and opinions expressed are however those of the authors only and do not necessarily reflect those of the European Union, SNS JU or UKRI. On November 29, the three Horizon Europe and 6G SNS projects 6G-SHINE project, SUPERIOT, and TERRAMETA Project have joined forces to offer a joint free webinar on a shared topic: Sustainable Wireless Design. The online session was led by three speakers who delivered invited talks. Meng Li, imec (6G-SHINE), delivered a compelling presentation on the analysis of sub-THz transceiver architecture power requirements for XR indoor gaming. Yasser Qaragoez, KU Leuven (SUPERIOT), shared insights on the use of biased-FSK modulation for efficient SWIPT in sustainable IoT. Luis Pessoa, INESC TEC (TERRAMETA), made a strong case for the sustainability of reconfigurable intelligent surface-based networks. The session concluded with an open discussion. We would like to thank the speakers for their contributions! 👏👏 You can watch the video of this session here: 🔗 https://lnkd.in/d4ptNsnc George Alexandropoulos #SNSJU #6GSNS #TERRAMETA #SUPERIOT #6Gshine
