Great to support such an ambitious objective: defining the technical 'language' that EU citizens and healthcare professionals will speak when exchanging health data cross borders! Let's make of the #EHDS #EuropeanHealthDataSpace a reality!

Health Data: primary and secondary use in 🇪🇺 The language in legislation and the professional debates surrounding it still struggles to make the distinction between primary and secondary use of health data truly clear. At the EEHRxF Summit, Markus Kalliola from Sitra made a refreshing effort to simplify it as it should be: ➡️ Primary use: Data collected for a direct purpose (e.g., prescribing a drug, administering a therapy in a clinical trial, or sequencing genomes for biobanks). ➡️ Secondary use: anything else (within the permitted use) It really should be that simple. The complex language in regulations and delegate acts could do better job to reduce confusion and contribute to better flow and interoperability of data despite different scenarios. With this simplicity, there’s no compelling reason for EEHRxF specifications, FHIR IG, or OMOP clinical models to be confined to either primary or secondary use. 🌍 As we kick start Session 1, Fulvia Raffaelli from the European Commission - DG SANTE emphasized that Member States must prioritize participation in the Xt-EHR project Joint Action, as it is the core groundwork for the European Health Data Space (EHDS) implementation in the coming years. With stakeholder consultations set for 2025, this is a crucial opportunity for all parties to collaborate and shape the future of health data interoperability across Europe. Meanwhile, Henrique Martins, #XpanDH Project Coordinator, shared how XpanDH is contributing to the EHR and EEHRxF Roadmap timeline. Through co-creation, communication, awareness-building, and innovative workshops like the X.Bubbles initiative, XpanDH is actively experimenting and supporting the formalization of the roadmap, driving progress in the healthcare data exchange space.
