The first-ever braille education and entertainment platform

نبذة عنا

Bonocle is a start-up from Doha, Qatar that was founded in 2014 on the basis of making technology solutions in either hardware or software form; to improve the lives of communities, individuals, and generations. Bonocle was founded by 4 engineers who have a passion for technology and innovation. Bonocle's first innovation is a device for the visually impaired (Ironically named Bonocle) that allows them to interpret the contents of any electronic device through the medium of braille. It does so while being both portable, powerful and, cheap! This is unprecedented; since many from the visually impaired community lacked adequate access to digital content mainly due to the extremely expensive currently available braille technologies. Bonocle also has an API that will allow developers to expand its usability by creating custom applications for Bonocle and the visually impaired community. The company's vision does not end with Bonocle. Our plan is to continue innovating, creating and solving technological problems that today's world and communities face. Last week, Bonocle was announced as a finalist for the World Innovation Summit for Education (WISE) Prize for Education! I was excited to attend the GenAI Summit in Athens, where I exchanged ideas with incredible experts about the future of education and presented how Bonocle makes learning easier, more accessible, and inclusive for the blind community. It’s inspiring to see so many passionate individuals and organizations working together to create a more inclusive and innovative educational landscape. Moments like these reaffirm our mission to make education accessible for all and highlight Bonocle's impact on this journey. We are truly grateful to the WISE team for their support and recognition, and we look forward to what we will achieve together! • Bonocle has always existed to serve the blind community. Whether it's waking up at 3 AM to get on a podcast in another timezone or waking up at 4 AM (multiple times in this case) to catch extremely early flights. Our founders are out there connecting, listening, and learning from our partners, customers and community. Check out our co-founders, Ramy Abdulzaher latest adventure spreading awareness about what we do at Bonocle.

10 days, 6 flights, 6 events in 7 cities, and countless awesome conversations. It's been exhausting, with many 5 and 6 AM flights and a lot of running (and "safe" driving) to catch meetings on time. Even though I'm pretty much sleep-deprived, I find myself extremely energized to get back to work. One of the reasons is definitely these incredible messages I find filling my inbox and a few in my bag. These people took the time out of their busy days to message me. It fills me up with joy and gratitude (and, I’ll admit, a few tears). Bonocle was created to serve the blind community, and the only way we can do that is by being out there listening to them. For everyone I met, get ready for many follow-ups and emails from me once ive had some sleep. Thank you to Genesis, Launch Export Atlantic Incubator, Beyond Ventures Group Inc. , CNIB, Government of Newfoundland and Labrador and everyone else who helped me out and played a role throughout the last 10 days. Its not common to find people and organizations that only want to support you with nothing in return. #StartupHustle #A11y #Accessibility #Blindness #Braille

How is Bonocle reducing Canada’s tax bill? Canada loses $4.3 Billion* (Yes, billion with a B) every year on loss of productivity and unemployment of people who have vision loss. The majority of this unemployment figure is attributed to braille illiteracy. In one of the last Bonocle gaming events a few weeks ago, we met two kids, Emit and Lily, both with progressive vision loss. In a chat with their parent, they mentioned that they had always been resistant to braille. This was evident when one of them said, “Ew, that's boring,” upon hearing that Bonocle used braille. A couple of hours later, these two kids were on the top of the Bonocle leaderboard and won 2nd and 3rd place. In the pictures, you can even see them showing interest when one of the other kids was using Bonocle to learn the Braille alphabet. With Bonocle, our goal is to eradicate braille illiteracy by making braille portable, accessible, and a lot of fun. Giving someone with vision loss braille literacy means the ability to read and write. It means giving them the tools to unlock their full potential and thrive. *From The cost of vision loss and blindness in Canada report by Deloitte (2021) #BrailleLiteracy #A11y #Blind #BrailleGaming #Braille #Inclusion #Canada

  • We recently held a gaming event at the CNIB Lake Joe Guide Dog Camp for blind kids and their guide dogs. It was an amazing experience to get some of these awesome kids to try out Bonocle and play our completely accessible games that are fun, educational, and empowering. The kids were competing in our endless runner game, where they controlled Bo, a robotic guide dog, and helped him get through an obstacle course to prove he’s ready to be a guide dog. The game features braille feedback combined with haptics and motion to create an immersive experience that is fully accessible to anyone with vision loss. Our team also had a great time chatting with the wonderful parents, and we could not forget the amazing hospitality of the CNIB team, especially Miriam Mas, who made the entire experience perfect. #a11y #AccessibleGaming #BrailleGames #Braille #VisionLoss #Blind

"Even though our market is niche, and that comes with its own complexity, we don’t believe it should reduce the importance of the problem we’re trying to solve." I'm glad Avery Mullen decided to include this quote in our latest article on Entrevestor.com. Throughout our journey with Bonocle trying to make Braille more accessible and easier to learn for blind students and adults. We were told many times that our market was too niche, and it wasn't worth the trouble. I'm happy that we remained steadfast on our mission as we head into the market and see the excitement on user's faces when they try it out. Thank you to everyone who believed in us and continues to support the Bonocle mission. Read the article here ↓ #A11y #AccessibilityForAll #Braille https://lnkd.in/e-yU7TGx
