Dr. Sertac Bayhan, Principal Scientist at the Qatar Environment & Energy Research Institute - QEERI, participated as an invited speaker at the Oman Climate Week Summit, held in Muscat, Oman, from February 24-27, 2025. In his talk titled "Energy Flexibility: A Catalyst for Sustainability and Climate Resilience," Dr. Bayhan emphasized the crucial role of energy flexibility in modern power systems. He discussed how flexibility mechanisms can enhance grid resilience, facilitate the seamless integration of renewable energy, and introduce innovative approaches to energy management. His insights highlighted the transformative potential of energy flexibility in advancing sustainability and addressing climate challenges. In recognition of his impactful contribution and the attention his presentation received at the summit, he was honored with the Best Presentation Award, presented in an award ceremony by H.E. Dr. Sa'd Shannak, Qatar Environment & Energy Research Institute - QEERI Scientist, recently participated in Oman Climate Week. He discussed residential electricity consumption in the GCC, exploring the balance between subsidies, technology, and climate considerations for sustainable energy policies. He presented a Qatar case study, highlighting strategies for optimizing energy use while addressing environmental challenges. In addition, Dr. Shannak was invited by Qatar University to conduct an educational workshop for school teachers on the importance of wastewater reuse and advanced treatment technologies. The session showcased successful local and international case studies, emphasizing the critical role of sustainable water management in education. Qatar Environment & Energy Research Institute - QEERI is proud to have been recently featured in the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 Final Sustainability Report, under the section "Air pollution control during tournament time." Our efforts in managing outdoor air quality played an important role in making Qatar 2022 the first FIFA World Cup to integrate air quality management into its sustainability strategy. This groundbreaking milestone now serves as a global benchmark for future tournaments. The report highlights our work during the FIFA Arab Cup 2021, our recommendations for air pollution mitigation at Qatar 2022, and our achievement of 100% air quality coverage across all matches.
