  • We strongly condemn the targeting and spreading lies about our friend and colleague, Dorotea, by Serbian politicians and media! As student protests and barricades continue and spread, the attacks of the Serbian government and government-led media have become stronger and more common. Media outlets have begun spreading lies and publicly revealing personal information, including personal IDs, of students and youth involved in protests. In the newest attacks, they have targeted and revealed personal information about our friend and colleague Dorotea. Dorotea, who is Croatian citizen, was visiting Belgrade for a work trip completely unrelated to current barricades, and she herself is not connected to protests. However, infamous Serbian politician and war criminal, Vojislav Šešelj, showed the pictures of her personal ID on the TV, claiming her visit to Serbia to be proof of Croatian involvement in student protests. Few other Croatian citizens beside Dorotea were also the target of this attack. This is not only horrible nationalistic fear mongering, but also violation of personal privacy and spread of propaganda, which confirms the lack of personal freedom and freedom of media in Serbia. Even though she is not connected with protests and barricades, Dorotea, safe again in Croatia, says she send her full support to Serbian students. We demand the response of competent authorities and for those responsible to be criminally prosecuted. It is unacceptable for the government of the country which is supposed to be on a European path to target young individuals (especially from other countries) and to spread misinformation of this kind.

  • On 1st of November, the roof of railway station in Novi Sad, Serbia, collapsed, resulting in the death of 15 people. More than a month and a half after the national tragedy, the government still did not take the responsibility. They have not made any serious steps in order to prosecute those whose work resulted in this, nor are they trying to make sure this never happens again. As a form of protest, students are currently barricading almost all universities across Serbia. Their demands are to publish the paperwork regarding the recent reconstruction of the railway station and criminal prosecution of those whose corruption and work lead to the collapse. After various physical attacks on students, they also added that those responsible should be arrested. Until these demands are met, students plan to barricade the faculty buildings. They have support of the University staff, and, at the moment, all the University work stopped. Various artists and public figures are also publicly voicing their support, while high schools are joining the protests. We fully stand with the students of Serbian universities as they are the ones teaching us about justice and fight against the corruption. • Finally! 🎉 Bulgaria and Romania are fully admitted into the Schengen Area. Congrats to our friends! This is a good decision, and we are ready for more such steps into the EU enlargement! Both countries were first supposed to join Schengen in 2012, as they fulfilled all the necessary conditions in 2011. The original plan was however opposed by Western European countries, especially shameful vetoes from Austria and Netherlands' governments that were withdrawn today. 🙌 🟢 We await another step towards the future: admission of candidate countries into the EU! This process is as untransparent and complicated as Romania and Bulgaria's Schengen Area accession. For example, Montenegro has been negotiating candidates since 2012 ⏳ These long processes damage the credibility of the EU and fuel euro-scepticism. The accession process needs to be transparent and with clear timeframe. Countries should not have a right to veto accession processes, as it is the case with Greece, and now Bulgaria, blocking North Macedonia's accession process. 🟢 We are against artificial extension of the accession processes and double standards towards the "old EU" countries and Eastern European candidates. For example, Austria was blocking Romania's accession to Schengen maintaining strong economic relations with Russia: until recently, it almost did not reduce gas imports from Russia (98% in December 2024), and its second largest bank, Raiffeisen, continues to operate and profit in Russia. Hence, it should not have a right to veto the accession of other countries 🚫 EU needs to eliminate the unanimity rule and establish a qualified majority! 🗳️

  • Floods hit Europe again, this time communities in Bosnia and Herzegovina! 🇧🇦 Over the past few days, we had witnessed again the lack of action by the politicians and decision makers on climate change, this time impacting citizens of the cities of Konjic, Jablanica and other towns and cities all across the Bosnia and Herzegovina. 💔 Unfortunately, many people have died, even more have been injured, while communities and critical infrastructure has been severely damaged and/or flooded. It is clear that this will inevitably happen again, due to climate change inaction. We would like to use this opportunity to express our condolences to the families and close ones of those who have lost their loved ones in this tragedy, as well as to show our support and solidarity with the citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina and first responders 🙏 We call once again politicians and decision-makers to put a climate action, human lives and our future at the top of their agenda and to take a more concrete action as we see that this is a serious security matter impacting entire Europe 🌲 We need to adapt our flood and drought protection program to current challenges that we face, especially by increasing the retention capacity of the landscape as natural flood protection via afforestation of the upper reaches of rivers, leaving space for natural spillover of rivers. 💡 We would also like to invite you to donate to the impacted communities that are in desperate need of help during these hard times.
