United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) concluded with great success the XXI Annual Steering Committee of the CIFAL Global Network from 10 to 12 December in Al Majmaah and Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Jointly organised by CIFAL SAUDI ARABIA and جامعة المجمعة | Majmaah University, the event brought together representatives from more than 30 countries to reflect on the network’s accomplishments in 2024 and set strategic priorities for 2025. 🌍 The meeting convened representatives from 34 training centres for engaging sessions focused on capacity building, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and the strategic direction for the future. 🇺🇳 Senior UNITAR officials led the event, which welcomed distinguished guests, including Mr Nikhil Seth, Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations and Executive Director of UNITAR, and H.E. Ambassador Luis Gallegos, President of the Board of Trustees of UNITAR. ➡️ Mr Alex Mejia, Director of the Division for People and Head of the CIFAL Global Network, chaired a town hall meeting that provided a strategic overview of UNITAR’s and the UN’s priorities. The "Expert in Human Rights Programme" was officially launched on 9 December in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. It is a learning initiative organized by the Saudi Human Rights Commission, United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), جامعة المجمعة | Majmaah University, and CIFAL SAUDI ARABIA. The programme aims to strenghten the capacities of Saudi professionals from all sectors in human rights through theoretical knowledge and practical experience, while fostering mutual learning from the experiences of both local and international human rights experts. The event was held in the presence of His Royal Highness Prince Turki Al-Faisal, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the King Faisal Centre for Research and Islamic Studies. Her Excellency Dr Hala bint Mazyed Al-Tuwaijri, President of the Saudi Human Rights Commission started the event emphasizing that human rights are not foreign concepts or practices drawn from another civilization or society, but are deeply rooted in the Kingdom’s values. Additionally, Mr Nikhil Seth, United Nations Assistant Secretary-General and Executive Director of UNITAR, highlighted that the Institute attaches special importance to enhancing awareness of international human rights law as a legal framework for promoting better societies for all, which has been one of the great successes of the UN. Mr Alex Mejia, Director of UNITAR's Division for People and Social Inclusion, described the "Expert in Human Rights Programme" as a model for the international community, marking the beginning of an educational journey with significant potential for sustainability. I had the privilege of joining the XXI Annual Steering Committee Meeting of the CIFAL Global Network in Al Majmaah and Riyadh—a gathering that brought together incredible leaders from around the world to align our goals, share ideas, and strengthen our shared commitment to sustainable development. Reflecting on what we achieved in 2024 and planning a roadmap for 2025 was a powerful reminder of how much we can accomplish when we work together. The discussions were full of energy and purpose, and it was inspiring to collaborate with my fellow CIFAL Directors and UN colleagues as we explored ways to create an even greater impact. A huge thank you to CIFAL SAUDI ARABIA, led by Aiman Albarakati, Ph.D. for the exceptional and warm welcome to your beautiful country and impressive university, and to the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) team—Nikhil Seth, Luis Gallegos, Alex Mejia, Ebru Canan Sokullu, Julio Andrade Ruiz, Estrella Merlos, and Adriana L.—for their guidance and vision, which continue to push this network forward. A special thank you to Nikhil Seth for your steadfast leadership throughout the years. It's an absolute pleasure for me to participate as the Director of CIFAL Surrey in the XXI Annual Steering Committee Meeting of the CIFAL Global Network here at جامعة المجمعة | Majmaah University University in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. This week we'll be reviewing the strategic goals of United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) itself, in parallel with the United Nations's SDGs, reviewing the work of each individual CIFAL centre, identifying areas of current coordination and future collaboration. Thanks to Dr Aiman Albarakati, Ph.D., Director of CIFAL SAUDI ARABIA for his wonderful hospitality, to Mr Nikhil Seth, UN Assistant Secretary-General and UNITAR Executive Director for his leadership these past 9 years, friend of Surrey's Centre for Healthy Ageing Ambassador Luis Gallegos and the indefatigable Mr Alex Mejia, Head of the CIFAL Network, who recently visited University of Surrey to help celebrate our own CIFAL launch. This afternoon, we hear from CIFAL centres in the Asia-Pacific & Australia, Africa, Eastern Europe and the Middle East and Latin America and the Caribbean. Truly wonderful to see the genuinely impactful way in which well-led CIFAL Centres make a huge difference in everything from environment and climate change to sustainability learning, public policy and governance and tech & innovation. These rights serve as a preventative, protective, and transformative force for progress. The United Nations Human Rights Campaign, "Our Rights, Our Future, Right Now", shines a spotlight on the real-world impact of human rights in tackling critical global challenges. ➡️ The 76th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights serves as a timely reminder and an opportunity to reaffirm our global commitment to protecting and upholding the inalienable rights of every human being.
