  • During the Nordic Autonomous Innovation Summit in Mountain View, San Francisco, Fredrik Åkeson from RISE Test Facility AstaZero had the opportunity to experience his first real Waymo Robotaxi ride.    𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐖𝐚𝐲𝐦𝐨 𝐑𝐨𝐛𝐨𝐭𝐚𝐱𝐢 𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐞? "The experience was remarkable. The vehicle operated smoothly and efficiently, showcasing the advanced state of autonomous driving technology."   𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐝𝐢𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐚𝐮𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐯𝐞𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐥𝐞 𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐥𝐞 𝐯𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜 𝐬𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐬 𝐝𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐩? "The Waymo Robotaxi adeptly navigated through different traffic conditions, including intersections and lane changes, demonstrating a high level of situational awareness and decision-making capabilities."   𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐰𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐚𝐟𝐞𝐭𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐭𝐚𝐱𝐢 𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐬? "The ride felt as safe and comfortable as a conventional taxi. The vehicle maintained appropriate speeds, adhered to traffic rules, and provided a smooth journey, which instilled confidence in the technology."   𝐁𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐨𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞, 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐩𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐝𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐬𝐞𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐚𝐫 𝐚𝐮𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐭𝐚𝐱𝐢 𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐄𝐮𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐮𝐫𝐛𝐚𝐧 𝐞𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬? "There is significant potential for integrating autonomous taxi services in Europe. However, it would require addressing regulatory challenges, public acceptance, and infrastructure adaptations to ensure seamless integration into existing urban transport systems. Additionally, it's important to note that Waymo's current operations are within specific geofenced areas that have been well-mapped, such as Phoenix, San Francisco and Los Angeles. Expanding beyond these predefined zones would necessitate extensive mapping and validation to ensure safety and reliability. These are expensive taxis with sophisticated sensor systems, and a lot of time and money has been invested in collecting all the data to train the vehicles, so the business case in these individual cases is quite difficult to justify." What a successful and inspiring day at the Nordic Autonomous Innovation Summit in Mountain View at our friends Volvo Innovation Hub! The day was structured with a system perspective to understand the deployment of Autonomous Driving (AD) from multiple angles: technology, policy and regulations, business models, public acceptance, and infrastructure.   Panels included key organizations and experts such as the California DMV, California Public Utilities Commission, Uber, Pony AI, Ericsson, Volvo Cars, AstaZero, and the Swedish Transport Agency, alongside thought leaders like Bryant Walker Smith and representatives from cities and public transport agencies in the Nordics and the U.S. This created a collaborative space to share insights and foster innovation.   While the approaches may differ—“US innovates, and EU regulates”—the summit demonstrated the power of dialogue and collaboration across regions to advance autonomous mobility.   Next steps? Let’s keep collaborating, sharing, and learning from one another. Perhaps the next event will take place in the Nordics—let’s make it happen!   If you’re interested in being part of this conversation or exploring partnerships, let’s connect. Together, we can drive innovation and create sustainable solutions for autonomous mobility.
