  • This week, EcoLink was inaugurated – a joint venture by Boliden Rönnskär and the local energy company Skellefteå Kraft to turn even more waste heat into district heating. The expanded district heating network means that more of the waste heat from Rönnskär will be used instead of being released into the sea, while Skellefteå Kraft no longer needs to burn peat to create heat. An improvement in Rönnskär's energy efficiency and overall, a large saving of carbon dioxide emissions. This project has been made possible through partial funding from the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency via the investment support program, Climate Leap (Klimatklivet).   We extend our gratitude to our partners Skellefteå Kraft AB and all others involved in making this a success.   In the photo are Linn Andersson, General Manager of Boliden; Evelina Fahlesson, Municipal Commissioner of Skellefteå Municipality; Kristina Sundin Jonsson, Head of Administration of Skellefteå Municipality; and Joachim Nordin, CEO of Skellefteå Kraft.

  • Boliden has been granted a mining concession for the Nautanen copper deposit outside Gällivare in Sweden. Nautanen is an historic mining site, and Boliden has conducted exploration in the area for many years. In addition to copper, the mining concession includes molybdenum, silver and gold. The mining concession, which has not yet entered into legal force, can be appealed. Before any mining can be carried out Boliden will also have to apply for an environmental permit, meaning that there is more exploration as well as detailed studies to be carried out and a long way to go before any mining can be carried out. However, this decision implies an important first step on the way to secure copper for the continued electrification of society. Learn more about our Nautanen project at https://bitly.cx/psOg

  • In Aitik, we implemented ecological compensation after extending our tailings dams in 2016. The area used was a selectively logged forest lacking dead and decaying wood, vital for many insect and fungi species. Our offsetting entailed translocating old tree trunks and decaying wood from the impact area and veteranizing existing trees.    The ecological compensation in Sarkanenä was made possible through a collaboration between Boliden, the ladowner Sveaskog and SLU (Swedish University of Agriculture), where research showed that many insect and fungi species moved to the new area. Sara Carlsén, our biodiversity coordinator at Boliden, emphasized the importance of these results: “These results show that there is a large potential to increase biodiversity values in the nature surrounding our mines. When we have tried all measures to avoid and minimize impacts on species and ecosystem, the last step is ecological compensation, and it is important to know that efforts such as translocating dead wood works.”    Two years ago, we inaugurated our first Sustainability Park in Aitik. This park features a 3 km adventure trail with interactive stations where visitors can learn about forest biodiversity. It also includes a fireplace, outhouses, and an accessibility ramp at the entrance.    Read more about our Sustainability Park at Boliden.com https://lnkd.in/dwYhcTx3

  • The Rävliden project, led by Frida Petterson, electrifies the mine and its machinery, including a five-kilometer-long electric trolley line that reduces diesel consumption by 80%. This brings us closer to our vision of being the most climate-friendly and respected metal supplier in the world.

  • Powerful Prospects: Moa Trains as an Electrician — While Working    Moa Luckey at Boliden Rönnskär in Skellefteå took the opportunity to retrain within the company. After eight years in the central laboratory, she’s preparing for a fresh start this spring.  “Going from lab technician to electrician isn’t something you can do in many places”, Moa says.    Moa recently completed her first practical training period and is looking forward to the next one.    “It was so exciting to get out into the field and try the things we’d been studying. Suddenly, we were working with real equipment: pulling cables, solving problems, and focusing on safety. I learn best by doing, and I had a great mentor who let me work hands-on.”    Read the whole article at https://lnkd.in/dQfJuvnn    #CareerDevelopment #Electrician #InternalTraining #BolidenRönnskär #Skellefteå #Boliden

  • We continue to guarantee society's access to base and precious metals. For a century, our work has been part of the value chains that have shaped modern society. At Boliden, we know that the metals we mine and make available will continue to play a pivotal role for generations to come.   With extensive experience, a high level of skills and leading technology we work towards reaching our vision of being the most climate friendly and respected metal provider in the world.

  • Our operations encompass land exploitation for exploration, mining, enrichment, processing, recycling, and transport. We also manage forests with a strong focus on sustainability. To meet our environmental goals, we adhere to the mitigation hierarchy, a recognized approach to biodiversity management. This involves: ▪️ Avoiding any impact where possible. ▪️ Minimizing unavoidable impacts with mitigation measures. ▪️ Restoring any impact through environmental remediation. ▪️ Offsetting residual impacts only after all other measures have been taken. Despite the challenges of land exploitation, we strive to create a net gain for biodiversity. One example of methods for offseting is our work with ecological compensation. The fish release in the Boliden area is one of our actions to give back to the community and offset the impact of our operations. #sustainability #biodiversity #responsiblemining #bolidenarea
