Recent breakthroughs in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) research have reshaped the landscape of diagnostics and treatment. At the forefront of these developments is Henrik Zetterberg, Professor of Neurochemistry at the University of Gothenburg and University of University College London, and one of the world’s leading researchers on biomarkers for neurodegenerative dementias.   Recently, Zetterberg and his team began combining proteomics methods with quantitative dried blood spot and plasma sampling to enhance the accuracy of remote AD biomarker detection. His lab is conducting ongoing studies using the advanced sampling cards Capitainer®SEP10 that separate blood cells during collection, ensuring a precise and quantitative volume. The exposome can be defined as the measure of all the exposures of an individual in a lifetime and how those exposures relate to health. PFAS, recently shown feasible to detect in Capitainer samples, is an example of an environmental exposure. Another example is heavy metals, being analyzed from Capitainer samples in our US laboratory miQro Lab Solutions equipped with ICP-MS. Not only chemical exposures are part of the exposome, but also impacts of exposure to physical, lifestyle and social factors. In this article, we will provide an overview of what is meant by the exposome and the field of exposomics.
