Solomon Gebrehiwet is a pharmacist and global health professional pursuing a Master’s in Global Public Health in Germany. He is the former Vice Chairman of the Eritrean Refugee University Graduates and Students Association. Solomon has worked with the Danish Refugee Council and participated in global forums, including the World Health Summit 2024 and COP27, advocating for refugee inclusion in health policy.   • Introducing our speakers 📢 Dr Wonci Ntombi (PhD) is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Institute of Pan African Thought and Conversation (IPATC) at the University of Johannesburg. Dr Wonci’s postdoctoral research project locates South Africa’s National Health Insurance (NHI) pilot program within the contested terrain of health policy experiments in Africa. Dr. Wonci holds a PhD in Sociology from the Social Policy DST/NRF SARChI Chair at the University of South Africa. Her research interests are health systems strengthening, health policy, universal health coverage, gendered health systems, reproductive health, feminism and Black studies. Our discussant, Tessa Klaas MA(c) is an MA Development Studies candidate at the University of Johannesburg, with a focus on health diplomacy during pandemics. Her research examines the diplomatic relationship between Cuba and South Africa and how it shaped their response to COVID-19, highlighting opportunities for the Global South to enhance pandemic preparedness through strategic health diplomacy. 💡This webinar will focus on South Africa’s National Health Insurance (NHI) policy, a key effort to address healthcare disparities between the private and public sectors.
