January is #CervicalCancer awareness month! Did you know that cervical cancer is the second most common cancer, after breast cancer, to affect women aged 15–44 years in the European Union? Each year, there are around 33 000 cases of cervical cancer in the EU, and an estimated 15 000 deaths. There is however a way to get ourselves safer! HPV vaccination is highly effective in protecting against the human papillomavirus, which is responsible for the large majority of cervical cancers. Watch our short animation and learn more on the European Vaccination Information Portal in YOUR language! https://lnkd.in/dQSJfFeb or read more about the #CervicalCancerAwarenessMonth here: https://bit.ly/3ChCAm4

Our latest issue is out, featuring ➡️ a study looking at the number of cases of #Toscana virus (#TOSV) infection in Italy, with TOSV being a major cause of central nervous system disorders in the Mediterranean region in the summer ➡️ a study looking at how the COVID-19 pandemic affected the circulation levels of human para-influenza viruses (#HPIV) in Scotland 🗞️ Read it here: https://lnkd.in/dFnixUrX

After Japan lifted COVID-19 restrictions, it saw an increase in paediatric viral infections, including invasive infections caused by #echovirus 11 (#E11) and other #enteroviruses (EVs) in newborns. A study in our latest issue looks at 3 cases of echovirus 11 infections in newborns in Japan, and analyses their lineage to assess the relationship between local E11 strains and those reported in Europe: https://lnkd.in/d-54M7xj

On Thursday December 19th we have hold our last seminar at the Spanish National Center of Epidemiology (Instituto de Salud Carlos III) of the 2024. Susana Monge and Roberto Pastor has presented their study for assessing the #effectiveness of immunisation against to the Respiratory Sincitial Virus in new-borns using a new methodological approach to emulate RCTs. Susana Monge showed how Spain has been a pioneer country to implement the biological drug #Nirsevimab as a vaccine to avoid serious respiratory complications in the first days of life. She worried how to evaluate the effectiveness when the younger the age of the newborn and the seasonality of the #RSV wave difficulted to estimate the impact of this nationally-wide implemented public health measure. The senior mathematical researcher Roberto Pastor brought the light to a new methodological approach by using causal methods to emulate a massive RCT for a national representative sample of #newborns. Together with our also senior mathematician Olivier Nuñez they have developed the mimicking of a randomization process for the first time for a case-control design nested in a cohort using #observational data. The paper will be published in few weeks in the prestigious journal Eurosurveillance. We are excited to read not only the paper but also the hidden treasure of the supplementary material where all the methodological details will be unveiled.

📢 Calling all science communication researchers! A group of us are organising a discussion session at the PCST conference in Aberdeen in May and I am looking for a researcher outside the EU to join us. Could that be you? The session is entitled: Will we ever overcome the misinformation crisis in science communication? We are looking for insights into the key causes of (science) misinformation in your region and ideas on solutions. So this would encompass research in related areas such as trust and expertise. It would involve a short, 5 min, presentation. If you would be interested in speaking (and aren't already at the maximum conference quota of contributing to 2 sessions) then please message me. #scicomm #journalism
