🎤 “If we are to create a large-scale impact in the food industry, we need to impact the core operations of the farmers. In fact, our task is to help the whole food value chain create a real sustainability impact by making it part of their core operations.” Improvin’s CEO Niklas Wallsargård took the stage at Slush to showcase how we leverage AI to help agri-food companies gain actionable insights into farm-level practices that impact their sustainability – all while requiring minimal effort from the farmers. 🌱 Niklas shared our collaboration with Hankkija Oy as an example of how this information empowers agri-food businesses across Europe to drive emissions reductions and support biodiversity, field by field. A big thank you to Tarmo Kajander and Lumi Orvokki Parviainen at Hankkija for allowing the audience to peek into the Puntari platform, and to Veera Kapitonenko, Maryama Moalim and the team at Slush for inviting us and delivering a well-organized event. We can’t wait to return next year. 🌟

🌱 Report: World’s largest food companies are struggling to quantify and reduce their Scope 3 emissions. A new analysis by the non-profit Ceres, Inc. investigating 50 largest North American food companies sheds a light into how the food sector has been addressing its GHG emissions. Key insights from the report: ☁️ Only 75 % of the studied companies have disclosed their Scope 3 emissions. ☁️ Less than 25% of companies have successfully reduced their Scope 3 emissions. ☁️ Many companies with Scope 1-2 reductions have seen an increase in their Scope 3 emissions, leading to an increased total footprint. The report underscores that while the food sector is making progress on reducing their direct emissions (Scope 1-2), the complexity of disclosing and addressing Scope 3 emissions from supply chains remains a significant challenge. This Scope 3 gap is preventing many food companies from achieving meaningful reductions in their overall carbon footprint. Read the report: https://lnkd.in/drQSfh6U

✍️ Takeaways from the Sustainable Commodities and Land Use Forum. Shauna Sadowski, Improvin’s Sustainability Integration Lead, met with the industry’s key stakeholders at Innovation Forum's Sustainable Commodities and Land Use Forum this week. Here are some of her takeaways from the event: 🔍 Traceability: Essential and evolving. Sustainability data remains a challenge for many companies, increasingly tied into legislation. Industry leaders recognize the value of both field-specific and landscape-level data to support decision-making, but laggards struggle to get the basic systems in place. Overall, the right data is key: without understanding the who (farmers) and the how (food production), we won’t make real progress. ⚖️ Risk over opportunity. The regulatory shift (EUDR, CSRD, CSDDD) is pushing some companies to focus mostly on risk and compliance. How do we move beyond a check-box mentality and use the legislative requirements to address deeper environmental and social challenges — and ultimately unlock opportunities for a thriving and more abundant future? 🌱 Integrating nature and climate. Many companies prioritize climate and carbon commitments, while leaders recognize the need for a more holistic approach. We need to connect climate risks with nature and people and push for integrated solutions. - 📸 Photos: Innovation Forum

Hankkija Oy is rolling out in Finland! 🇫🇮 🚜 Last week, Pauliina and Philip from Improvin’ teamed up with our customer Hankkija at #MaatalousKonemessut, Finland’s largest farmer fair. Together, we introduced Finnish farmers to “Puntari”, Hankkija’s new system for tracking field-grown crop CO2 footprints and overall sustainability using per-field primary data. 🌱 The farmer feedback was positive, with many expressing interest in learning more about their current CO2 footprint and how different farming practices can impact it. Their curiosity highlights the growing importance of data-driven insights in today’s agriculture. Soon, all Hankkija contract farmers will receive an invitation to the new Puntari system. 🤝 🇫🇮 A huge thank you to Tarmo Kajander, Jouko Korkeamäki, Juha Honkaniemi, Maria Pekkala, Antti Ahola, Maarit Tammelin and Ari Laaksonen for the warm welcome and great execution of the farmer fair. Until next time!

Introducing a new Improviner! 🌍🌱 Shauna has dedicated her career to making a positive impact on food systems. Out-of-office, you’ll likely find her diving into the waters on Sweden’s west coast or whipping up seasonal dishes with her family. 🏊♀️🥕 PS. We’re hiring: https://lnkd.in/dYmJXu_X ▪️ Hi Shauna! 👋 What makes your work exciting? I’ve spent the past 20 years working at the intersection of food, agriculture and sustainability, first in consulting and later with various food companies. My work has focused on raising awareness, building evidence-based programs, and working with stakeholders to drive positive change. Data plays a key role in business decisions, and sustainability is equally reliant on data. However, sustainability data is less developed relative to financial data. Improvin’ helps businesses acquire farm-level data, enabling the companies to foster deeper supply chain relationships instead of chasing numbers – and that’s incredibly exciting. ▪️What made you choose Improvin’? Improvin’ combines a unique understanding of farming and trade relationships, with in-depth knowledge of the digital landscape. It’s easy to talk about the importance of tech and AI while forgetting the reality of work in the fields. Growing seasons have a rhythm and change takes time. Luckily, technology can enhance our understanding and accelerate change. What I value most is how we involve farmers, giving them a real voice. Trust from farmers is crucial in this shift: they are a key part of the solution. ▪️Your thoughts about the team? I’m so inspired by our diverse team whereby each person brings their own unique knowledge and talents, with a shared passion for sustainability. I feel a sense of pride in solving this global challenge together. No one needs convincing to care. I also see curiosity and fresh perspectives in our team, and I believe this is key to success in our line of work. ▪️ What’s the out-of-office Shauna into? Well, food is what I’m into! In my family, we strive to cook with the seasons, buying directly from farmers and celebrating fresh finds. I am that weird person who will happily stroll the grocery store aisles and food markets looking for new and interesting brands and ingredients. Water is my happy place: swimming in pools, seas and lakes is where I feel most connected. My swimming team gives me a strong sense of community. I’ve been living on Sweden’s west coast for almost 3 years. Moving from California was a big change, and I’ve been noting down my observations in a Substack. Writing has been a great creative outlet. ▪️ 3 things that excite you right now? 🚜 It’s exciting to see how farming is starting to take its place at the center of the food system transformation. 🍂 Personally, I’m winding down from a busy summer and embracing the autumn cooling season. 💚 This winter, I look forward to celebrating the seasonal shift with my family, spending time outdoors and inside by a cozy fire.
