A strong week for defence tech, and a wake up call for Europe as the Nordic Air Defence team returns from three days in Germany attending the Munich Security Conference! Transatlantic security dynamics are shifting, and we can no longer solely rely on the US for European defence. As we reach a geopolitical turning point, all eyes are on Europe, not helped by the Trump administration's irreversible shift in Western defence funding. So, the key takeaway from the conference is that Europe's defense future rests in its own hands. Now is the time to increase defence spending, to build and support innovative, homegrown European defence tech solutions. To make Europe self-sufficient when it comes to defence, we need to: Increase Investment: A focus on defence-focused VC funds is crucial and existing funds must adapt to support the growing need for innovation in this sector. Institutional investors and the government have to ensure ESG rules don’t restrict defence investment. Empower Founders: To safeguard democracies, defence innovators require robust backing and resources to develop the cutting-edge technologies that will safeguard our democracies, this includes access to user feedback and streamlined technology adoption outside traditional procurement. Harvest home-grown talent: Bring together the brightest minds in defence technology from across Europe, instead of relying on foreign ‘intellectual investment’ from the US. Last week I spent the day at the BRAVE1 European Defense Tech Hub's Munich hackathon, coinciding with the annual Munich Security Conference — where hackers and organisers were all buzzing about AI and drones. 👉 But the recent protectionist rhetoric coming from the US is part of the reason why hackathons like the one at EDTH are urgent right now: “We have a nihilist in power who does not care about anything beyond domestic issues and China. There's little incentive for him right now to support Ukraine,” EDTH cofounder Jonatan Luther-Bergquist says of President Trump. “We can't count on the US. We don't have the money, we don't have the people and war is happening — there's one solution to this for us, at least, and that is tech and adoption of tech.” My deep dive, on Sifted:
