  • 2024: The most eventful year in our journey, so far! Our team has grown, we’ve advanced our R&D and battery testing and taken steps towards our first pilot installation in 2025. Key Highlights of the year: - Chemical Development: We’ve designed, synthesized and tested a range of promising redox-active molecules, developing a higher-performing electrolyte formulation than we had previously.   - Intellectual Property: We’ve filed for three additional patents covering the use (and reuse) of our electrolytes for flow batteries.   - Expanded R&D & Battery Testing: We now run eight parallel lab batteries, soon expanding to 24. This enables us to monitor more variables, accelerate our development and do more rigorous testing.   - Chemical Scale-up Toward Pilot Installation: We are now synthesizing 100s of kilos of our organic molecules with our chemical suppliers, preparing for our first pilot installation in 2025.   - Advanced Testing Setup: Our new and improved testing setup allows us to run our lab-scale flow batteries in a completely oxygen-free atmosphere without using expensive gloveboxes – stay tuned for updates!   - Constant Power Cycling: We’ve explored testing our batteries using Constant Power Cycling at different temperatures which allows us to imitate how the batteries are used commercially.   - New Partnerships: We’ve strengthened our value chain and network with valuable LOIs for commercial partnerships, welcomed Niclas Davidsson to our Board of directors and professor Henrik Sundén to Rivus’ Advisory Board, as well as becoming a member of the West Swedish Chemical and Material Cluster.   - Team Growth: Our team has grown from two to five full-time team members during 2024, plus a few consultants and master students! We’ve also moved into our own 220 m2 office and lab.   - Recognition: Rivus has been featured in five newspaper articles, including GöteborgsPosten, Dagens industri, Aktuell Hållbarhet, Castellum and Tidningen Energi. We also won four awards, including the E-prize, The Business Booster by EIT InnoEnergy, Sting Climate Race, and the Vinnova pitch competition at The Tech Arena.   This has been a year full of challenges and progress to say the least and we look forward to an even more eventful 2025. Thank you to everyone who has been a part of our journey. Happy Holidays! 🎉

  • “Under the eaves of a four-storey building in southern Gothenburg, the batteries of the future are being developed”. Tidningen Energi recently visited us and stepped into what they called “The future lab”. Dressed in white lab coats, our CTO Dr. Lisa Åkerlund and Research Scientist Dr. Eduardo Maurina Morais gave them a guided tour of Rivus’ lab operations, sharing our recent progress in developing and commercializing a metal-free battery chemistry for flow batteries. - “The last year has been full of progress, we have moved to new premises, built up our own lab, and set up a test operation with eight parallel stations at the same time, soon expanding to 24. We also build all the batteries ourselves and have developed the battery chemistry to be even better than the formulation we had before”. – Lisa Åkerlund Today’s flow batteries rely on vanadium, a costly, environmentally damaging heavy metal sourced, primarily from China, Russia, and South Africa. At Rivus, we take a different approach, using organic molecules derived from widely available materials, combined with water and salt, to produce our electrolytes.   Rivus’ first major demonstration is now underway, installing our first customer pilot in the first half of next year. The building has solar panels, and the goal is to do tests for over a year and to demonstrate that the system works. It will be the first organic flow battery to be tested in a commercial system in Sweden. Dr. Cedrik Wiberg, Rivus’ CEO and founder, is optimistic about the future. - “I think that when one of the industrial giants has decided to use organic flow batteries, the market will really take off.” – Cedrik Wiberg Thank you, Tidningen Energi, for an insightful article that highlights the importance of the green energy transition and the role that long duration energy storage solutions, like Rivus’s organic flow battery technology, can play in accelerating the transition to renewable energy sources.
