Season's greetings from Stegra! Our team has put up a Christmas tree at the construction site in Boden! Keeping in mind Stegra's commitment to sustainability in our construction process, the tree was built using recycled materials from the factory.

Accelerating the decarbonization of hard-to-abate industries

What a year it has been at Stegra! After starting 2024 by securing more than €6.5 billion in project financing, progress in Boden has moved ever more quickly on our way to kicking off production of green steel in 2026. The team at Stegra has grown to more than 300 full-time employees, with nearly 2000 construction workers on site every day building the world's first large-scale green hydrogen, green iron and green steel plant. Check out the timelapse of our progress this year! ⤵️

"The reason I like the steel industry, and especially operations, is there’s always something new happening. No two days are alike. There’s always an opportunity to see something new and make a new decision about things. This is my third steel mill start-up, and I really enjoy the excitement of starting up a new facility, not only that it’s exciting at work but also to see how it impacts the community at large. We don’t build steel mills in big cities anymore. We put them in places where there’s a labor opportunity, where the community could use some economic growth, like in my previous projects in small-town Arkansas and Mobile, Alabama. So we get to sit back and watch the community benefit from the new income, tax revenue, and opportunities. It also leads to other things, like new restaurants and hotels. What excites me about this project is that I get all of that, plus we’re really changing a commodity for good. We’re changing the way the world thinks about steel. We’ve been making steel the same basic way for so many years, and for all those years, it’s been the same dirty, polluting industry. And now we’re going to change that. And that is super exciting. I’ve got kids. I want my kids to live in a better world. And if we can set the example, not only for steel but other industries as well, I hope we can inspire other companies to do things in a different way." – James Ritt, Head of Planning and Shipping

How do we actually produce green steel? Our plant in Boden is based on our three platforms – green hydrogen, green iron and green steel. While the biggest emissions reduction results when we replace fossil fuels with green hydrogen in the iron reduction step, we aren't stopping there. In our green steel mill, we will use induction and electrical heaters instead of gas-fired furnaces. And by having all our production in the same place, from the green hydrogen plant all the way to the cold rolling mill, we can optimize the flow for maximum efficiency at scale.

This week, Stegra welcomes the first factory workers to Boden! Coming from Sweden, Sri Lanka, the United States and Nigeria, the group of five – Martin, Jonni, Thishani, Justin and Eghosa – have all joined our team as shipping operators. Building a green steel operation from the ground up takes teams of operators, automation specialists, electricians and mechanics. Interested in joining the team? Though winters in northern Sweden may be long, they’re also nothing short of breathtaking. At our construction site in Boden, the workday often begins or ends with a sunrise or sunset that lights up the sky. The cold season is only just beginning, meaning there are many months of magical winter light to come!

“If I get to choose between going to a bar or restaurant with friends or sitting around a campfire, I choose the campfire every time! I’m from a Swedish-speaking town called Pedersöre in Finland, but sometimes when you’re from a small town, you just want to get out in the world! So I went to Paris, Vancouver, and Stockholm and studied business and biology. I have spent most of my career in Stockholm working within tech and impact firms. I started at Stegra in Stockholm in May and moved to Boden in July. It feels really good, with a new routine and a new way of living. I actually live in a cabin at a nearby ski area. It’s very cozy with a sauna and all my plants! I love it here – there’s a lot of hiking and skiing and nature, so many cabins in the forest and along the river where you can stay over and use the sauna or go for a swim. Here in the north people are really open and so it’s easy to meet new people. In my life, I’ve always been the kind of person organizing and inviting other people to things, but here a lot of people are inviting me to things! And with all the new colleagues from different countries, people are so open. I just love it." – Nadja Ekblom, Digital workplace specialist

More powerful news 🔌 In a long-term agreement with Uniper we have have secured a yearly supply of electricity ranging from 2027-2032, covering a total of 6 TWh. Significant volumes of electricity are needed to power our 700MW electrolysis plant that will generate green hydrogen, which in turn will reduce iron ore to green sponge iron that will feed the steel production at our plant in Boden. Through this collaboration with Uniper, we have secured another important component of our plant's electricity supply. Read more about the news at our website!

2 TWh of electricity coming up 🔌 We have signed a power purchase agreement with Axpo Nordic for the supply of electricity to our integrated plant in Boden. Under the agreement, Axpo Nordic will supply 2.25 TWh of electricity over three years, starting in 2027. Axpo is a pioneer of power purchase agreements in the Nordics and great example of an innovative player on the electricity market. They are a good partner for us at Stegra in securing electricity for our large-scale production of hydrogen, iron and steel in Boden. Read more about the news here: https://lnkd.in/dcjitMtP
