Sweden’s first Citizens’ Assembly on Climate delivers insights into achieving the Paris Agreement goals while enriching and deepening the climate debate. Today, a report is presented in Parliament, showcasing how ordinary Swedes found common ground on climate action. Many assembly members shifted their perspectives on lifestyle changes and the role of individual consumption, with some initial skeptics now supporting key measures. “The Citizens’ Assembly has shown that the competitive and polarized debate surrounding climate policy does not necessarily reflect how ordinary Swedes want to discuss the issue. Despite vastly differing starting points, assembly members succeeded in finding common ground and agreeing on several proposals and measures. “It is time to get a binding agreement on plastics that caps production, creates transparency in production volumes, and drastically reduces the amount of plastics entering the environment,” says Centre researcher Robert Blasiak. The issue of plastics is not confined to a single country or community—it is a global problem, Blasiak emphasises in an interview with Al Jazeera Media Network. “We need solutions that work for the whole world, not just the wealthiest. “Plastics are often seen as waste that can be easily cleaned up, but this is far from reality,” says Centre researcher Patricia Villarrubia-Gómez. Villarrubia-Gómez has led a study which reveals that plastic pollution exacerbates the impacts on all planetary boundaries, including climate change, biodiversity loss, and ocean acidification. These findings are particularly timely as the fifth session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC) begins today in Busan, Republic of Korea. Villarrubia-Gómez is attending the session, where delegates aim to finalise and draft a legally binding international agreement on plastic pollution. “Seeking solutions, it is necessary to consider the full life cycle of plastics, starting from the extraction of fossil fuel and the primary plastic polymer production,” she says. For the first time, researchers highlight the growing influence of the Planetary Boundaries across sectors and its impact on society and policy. They show that within 15 years of its initial proposal, the Planetary Boundaries have become widely recognised for advancing the global sustainability agenda in an era of rising planetary risks. ”Thanks to the Planetary Boundaries, we have clear evidence that there is no solution to the climate crisis, without coming back to a safe operating space for biodiversity, water, land, ocean, nutrients and aerosols.
