In our last post in our series on how we work with sustainability, we move to Söderhamn and Jeven. Jeven develops and sells a unique and efficient air purification solution where Johannes Carlsson assists them with Sustainable Value Engineering. Read more below! Q. Where are you currently on assignment and what do you do there? A. I am currently assigned at Jeven AB. I help them with Sustainable Value Engineering by reducing the manufacturing carbon footprint of their products. We do this by maximizing the technical potential both with advanced engineering solutions, making simplifications and CFD optimization to eliminate bottlenecks and balancing the product requirements. Q. From a sustainability point of view, what are the benefits of the customers solution? A. Jeven has an amazing grease separation system called Turboswing. It is for separating grease fumes in the ventilation from the exhaust air and instead of capturing it in a disposable filter cloth it collects the grease in a bucket. Just empty, clean and reuse, while also having less flow restrictions the ventilation fans can work at a lower power level. I call this an active filter. Q. What is your most exciting part of your assignment? A. Achieving a good performance in making a more compact product that is lighter and use less material to be manufactured and faster assembly. If we can get more units out there the world will see cleaner air, less waste and much reduced energy consumption for commercial kitchens.

  • I'm proud to present the next sustainability Q&A post featuring Simon Arnling Bååth and his role at Volvo Group. Simon is a wizard at combining mathematics and physics with embedded software development. On a daily basis, he helps Volvo understand battery behavior, model-based development, and generate code for their BMS. Here's what Simon says about his daily work: Q. Where are you currently on assignment and what do you do there? A. Right now I have an assignment at Volvo Technology in the inhouse Battery Management System (BMS) group. I'm part of the algorithm development team, and work with a broad set of tasks including battery control algorithms, cell modelling and cell test development. Currently I am focusing on how to do tests to characterise Li-ion battery cells, and how to get that characterisation into the BMS (and then into a vehicle)! Q. From a sustainability point of view, what are the benefits of the customers solution? A. In a world which must transition from oil into battery energy storage, BMS development is key to make it happen. The BMS is the brain of the battery pack, and makes sure that it not only is safe to use but also performing to its maximum. Many of the big sustainability questions of today, such as how to prolong the life of an electric vehicle, can and must be solved by improvements to the BMS. Q. What is the most exciting part of your assignment? A. Battery algorithms are tricky, but helping out Volvo in the transition into electric vehicles feels very meaningful. It is also fun to work with actual bleeding-edge technology in an environment which both values scientific exploration while requiring you to perform!

  • First in our sustainability Q&A series is Håkan Nilsson, a talented mechatronics engineer at TroniQ. He is currently a test lead at Modvion, an exciting and challenging assignment that he really loves. Let's hear what Håkan has to say about his daily work. 𝗤. 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗱𝗼? A. My current assignment is at Modvion, a company that is developing a modular wind turbine tower from composite wood material. My role here is as test lead for analysis and verification in R&D for future projects. 𝗤. 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗮 𝘀𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗽𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄, 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗿’𝘀 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻? A. The most obvious benefit from a sustainability standpoint is the fact that wood is a carbon sink form the start. The less obvious but more important benefit of the solution is the modular manufacturing and construction method used. This allows Modvions towers to be build taller and in locations that traditional steel towers have a limited hight at due to transportation limitations or can’t reach at all. This increases the potential amount of renewable energy generation that can be built. 𝗤. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗲𝘅𝗰𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁? A. The most interesting and exciting part of my assignment is working on completely new and untested applications for wooden materials. We are using them to the limit of their capabilities to create a product that can compete with steel and concrete solutions. Also, I get to break stuff in testing which is always fun and gives you aha moments every time!

  • Now we reached the end of presenting TroniQ business. The final area in which we assist our clients is Sustainable Value Engineering. At its core, value engineering involves examining the product lifecycle to identify cost savings. It is a broad area that spans from concept to product termination. In addition to costs, we also consider market and sales perspectives. This could involve introducing new technology in the product to make it more competitive or simplifying the design and increasing usability. We can also do value engineering with a sustainability perspective. This helps clients not only to meet existing and future directives in the field, but also to create competitive advantages that arrises with sustainable products. Our way of working is characterized by simplicity and transparency; all results we produce or propose have clear value and are implementable. No fancy or fluffy models, we believe more in a pragmatic approach. The next series will be more about how we work with sustainbility and product development, an important and highly relevant topic. So stay tuned!
