This week, we had the pleasure of welcoming Dr. Eva Lexutt from FernUniversität in Hagen to our research group. Today, Eva shared insights from her recent study on service selling, offering a social capital perspective on how salespeople’s networking skills drive servitization sales performance. We thoroughly enjoyed Eva's presentation, and we hope she equally enjoyed the early Christmas-style lunch that followed! 🎅🎄 Thank you, Eva, for your visit! 🌟 #Servitization #ServiceSelling #SocialCapital

🙌 Congrats, Christian Kowalkowski! 🎉 #TeachingExcellence
🚀 We're happy to share the latest publication: "The Co-evolution of Actor Engagement and Value Co-creation on Digital Platforms," coauthored by CBMI professor Christian Kowalkowski. 🔍 In a world where digital platforms are reshaping how suppliers, customers, and ecosystem partners connect, this study dives deep into Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) offerings within the asset management industry. By comparing two fintech PaaS models—a freemium and a subscription-based—we uncover distinct developmental pathways fueled by the interaction between actor engagement (AE) and value co-creation (VCC). ✨ Key Takeaways: The freemium model thrives on a “viral” community-building path, with early VCC sparking further AE. The subscription model adopts a “controlled” ecosystem-building approach, where AE is the catalyst. 💡 Our findings highlight how AE and VCC drive platform scaling and partner involvement, shaping upgraded solutions and expanded offerings. The proposed framework and research propositions provide a roadmap for future studies and practical strategies for managers looking to innovate through PaaS. 🔗 This work bridges digital servitization and platform ecosystem literature, providing a valuable perspective for navigating PaaS development in complex industries. We hope this sparks new ideas and strategies for PaaS initiatives and research! ***Gratitude Post*** After two incredible weeks as a visiting researcher at the University of Verona, I am filled with gratitude and appreciation. A heartfelt thank you to my wonderful host Vania Vigolo and the Department of Management for the warm welcome, insightful discussions, and the opportunities to exchange knowledge. In addition to the academic inspiration, experiencing the rich Veronese culture has been a true gift. From the historic charm of the city to the vibrant local cuisine, every moment was memorable. A highlight was definitely the visit to the Monte Del Frá winery, where I gained insight into the traditional wine-making process and had the pleasure of tasting some exceptional wines. 🍷Thank you Silvia Bonomo for your hospitality. I am also immensely grateful to the Department of Management and Engineering (IEI) at Linköping University for making this experience possible.

🚀 New Research Alert! 🚀 Excited to share our latest study on the role of knowledge-intensive relationships in driving digital servitization strategies in B2B manufacturing. 📈 Co-authored by CBMI Professor Christian Kowalkowski, this research sheds light on how manufacturers can innovate their business models by leveraging external knowledge-intensive service providers (KIBS). 🌐 🔍 Key Takeaways: ✅ We identified three unique pathways leading to successful knowledge-intensive relationships, depending on factors like firm size, digital readiness, internal participation, and specific hiring programs. ✅ KIBS can act as implementation assistants, specialized outsourcees, or even enablers of digital transformation and business model innovation. ✅ Companies must be strategic in the search, selection, and relationship-building process with KIBS to maximize success. Our configurational approach offers actionable insights for B2B manufacturers looking to enhance their digital transformation journey. 🔧 📄 Check out the full study to learn how to leverage external expertise to drive digital servitization and business model innovation. https://lnkd.in/dKi7zKHU #servitization #digitalization #businessmodel #innovation #digitaltransformation Marco Paiola, Mario Rapaccini, Roberto Grandinetti

At today’s research seminar, we had the pleasure of hearing Xichen Sun from Tilburg School of Economics and Management present his fascinating work on building theory through qualitative meta-analysis, using causal diagrams from system dynamics. 🔄 He presented a process theory that explores the conflicts between product and service operations during service business development. The study identifies critical factors that contribute to common failure modes at various stages of #servitization, and it establishes causal links between organizational structure and behavior, offering new insights into the variability of business performance. We also had an enriching discussion on topics like boundary conditions in servitization, which sparked some great insights. Thank you, Xichen, for your valuable contribution and for sharing your knowledge with us! 🙌

What makes market-shaping strategies effective? A new paper in Industrial Marketing Management answers this question. A fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis reveals six effective market-shaping strategies. Key highlights: 💡 There are six elements of market-shaping strategies: Offering, Pricing, Customer-side, Supply-side, Representations, and Norms. 💡 Effective strategies combine multiple elements; no single element is sufficient. 💡 Six distinct market-shaping strategies with different objectives were identified. 💡 None of these strategies included all six possible elements.
