  • 48 Swedish cities, which represents more than half of Sweden's population, are now gathering forces for the climate transition from local to global level. During European Viable Cities Day, the mayors from the cities, directors general from six national government agencies, representatives from the European Commission, other Swedish and international key players gathered to strengthen the mobilization for the climate transition across national borders. – The Swedish Energy Agency's journey within the Climate City Contract 2030 has shown that the interaction between different levels is central, but also challenging. During the year, the work with Viable Cities and the 2030-cities in the policy lab on municipal energy planning and energy communities has given us valuable insights. By taking advantage of the possibilities of digitization, continuing to develop our working methods and common calculation methods, a sustainable transformation of our cities and communities can be accelerated, says Caroline Asserup, Acting Director General of the Swedish Energy Agency. During the day, there were international guests as well as representatives of industry, academia, public sector and civil society. Sweden's new EU Commissioner Jessika Roswall also participated during the day, in the first week of her role as Commissioner. • After long and intensive negotiations at the UN climate conference COP29 Azerbaijan the Parties agreed on rules and procedures for emissions trading under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. These decisions create conditions for the international carbon market to scale. – For the Swedish Energy Agency and Sweden, it was important that the countries could also agree on rules for the UN-regulated emissions trading, says David Newell, Sweden's negotiator for Article 6. Outside the negotiation rooms, there was great interest in discussing the climate and energy transition with the Swedish Energy Agency. – With two new bilateral cooperation agreements in place, we now have better conditions to implement mitigation activities that can produce results by 2030, says Sandra Lindström, Head of International Climate Cooperation at the Swedish Energy Agency. • COP29 has officially begun – and an important reason for the Swedish Energy Agency's presence at COP29 Azerbaijan in Baku is that the agency is responsible for establishing cooperation agreements on emissions trading under the Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. The goal is to implement mitigation activities in low- and middle-income countries that help the countries in their green transition, while at the same time contributing to Sweden’s fulfillment of its own climate goals.
