Take 3 for the Sea NEW RESEARCH First scientific evidence of its kind reveals the power of beach clean ups takeforthesea Norwegian research organisation Norce has, for the first time, found evidence that beach clean ups rapidly and dramatically reduce the amount of microplastics in the environment. Within a year of clean ups removing bags, bottles and other large plastic litter from the shore of an Island near Bergen, scientists found a 99.5% reduction in microplastics on land and in surrounding oceans. Researchers speculate that high levels of UV and warm temperatures of shallow beach water are responsible for the rapid degradation of plastic found on beaches, asserting beach cleans as an important intervention for reducing leakage of microplastic into the sea. "Clean up plastic on the shores, clean up all the plastic in the environment. It really makes a difference," Gunhild Bodkter, researcher at Norse, explained.
