Is passion and a desire to lead enough to drive real impact? As our Groundbreakers break into the new year, they turn back to the drawing board to plan out strategic steps to take for the year ahead! Lewis Liu, CEO of Crowdsense, opened the pillar on Strategy with a vision boarding exercise on how our Groundbreakers envision Singapore’s headlines in 2030. Through this, our Groundbreakers envisioned what the headlines of newspapers would be in 2030. With eyes set on the future, the session pushed participants to: 💡 Think strategically and critically about the systems they operate in to anticipate scenarios using Futures Thinking Methodologies 🧩 Map out key inputs, outputs, and outcomes and how to measure impact using Theory of Change 🎯 Define Objectives and Key Results (OKRs) and translate them into an actionable 3, 6, 12-month roadmap, highlighting key steps they would take to achieve their desired outcomes and milestones for the year ahead! 🚨 A hard truth? Burnout kills impact. Sustainability requires balance. As Lewis Liu shared, “Groundup leaders often push themselves to do as much as possible, but guilt over slowing down can lead to burnout. Pacing yourself and prioritising self-care are essential for long-term impact.” Whether driven by passion or purpose, strategy is what transforms ideas into meaningful, lasting change. Armed with a refreshed vision and purpose statement, our Groundbreakers embarked on the second pillar on Ecosystem, facilitated by Bernise Ang and Shaun Koh of Zeroth Labs. What kind of power do groundups hold? Despite being informal groups, groundups are passionate groups dedicated to serving the community in their own little ways. What then, is the next step? Many bubbles, loops and arrows were drawn over the course of two days as our Groundbreakers unpacked the systems they operate in using a myriad of systems thinking tools including Problem Definition Canvas, Iceberg Model and Causal Loop Diagrams. Through these, they were able to delve deeper into and unpack underlying patterns of their issues and consider new ideas and partnerships to catalyse and amplify purpose-driven impact. At the base of this, is power. Who should be the one igniting change? It can seem daunting for a small, informal group to move the big rocks of the system. As Shaun walked participants through identifying different forms of power, he pointed out that groundups have power in their flexibility and nimbleness but of course, “Systems change takes time, the cause is all on us, by ‘us’. It is not just the founders, but also the community at large. Always remember to reach out to your community.” Perhaps they won’t have to look far, as they have certainly formed close connections within the Groundbreakers network! 🙌🏻 Interested to join BAGUS Together Groundbreakers community? “The Achievers is a groundup initiative that serves long stay residents in the Buangkok Green Medical Park through befriending. Over the last five years, we’ve created more than 70 volunteering opportunities on giving.sg/volunteer to recruit volunteers for PHAngel, which involves snack distribution during public holidays, and befrienders to bring residents for outings. The platform is easy to navigate and use. Creating a volunteer opportunity takes less than 5 minutes, and we can answer queries on the go as our contact information is made available to interested volunteers. To date, we have successfully recruited over 500 volunteers, many of whom came back to volunteer with us.” – Kwon Seng, Groundup Leader of The Achievers Seeking volunteers for your groundup’s activities? 🌞 “I am a sunshine leader!” said one of our Groundbreakers, Sruti, when asked to describe her leadership style in the first of the Groundbreakers Leadership Programme masterclasses, on the topic of Purpose and Leadership. Facilitated by Dr. Jade Kua, founder of Jade Life And Wellness Coaching Academy, the Groundbreakers explored the stages of Transformational Leadership — Awareness, Vision Development, Implementation and Sustaining Change. They reflected on their leadership goals and styles, crafting their personal vision statements while drawing inspiration from leaders they admired. 🎭 Being a groundup leader is never easy – dealing with burnout, disengaged volunteers and building a vision, are all struggles that every groundup leader faces. Aiming to provide ideas to address such issues, the first session rounded off with a dynamic roleplay on managing volunteer disengagement, applying their learnings on personal values and reinforcing their leadership styles. Yet with all the challenges that come with being a groundup leader, burnout is inevitable among leaders and the team. 🌟 The second session began with an exploration on signs of burnout and strategies on how to display and apply transformational leadership principles. The highlight was a ‘Vision Building Tower’ activity, where participants used Lego to symbolise their group’s dreams and hopes for the groundup community – a desire to be a force for good, with origami floral representing flourishing growth and connections. 🌱 Three key insights were gained through this first pillar on Purpose and Leadership: 1. Strong values and a purpose statement are important in demonstrating leadership in a groundup. 2. Having personalised check-ins with team members and volunteers to understand their values, goals and long-term plans can help keep them more engaged. 3. Celebrating wins – no matter big or small – goes a long way. 🌄 The journey continues – stay tuned as we explore topics that will forge our path towards being more impactful leaders!
