The Global Mitigation Potential Atlas is expanding to bring more nations together in achieving their net-zero emission targets. By modeling solutions like green electricity imports and offshore wind farms, the atlas demonstrates how cross-border partnerships can lower the costs needed for redcution in emissions. During the COP29 Singapore Pavilion in Azerbaijan, Mr Benedict Chia, Director-General of Climate Change at Singapore’s National Climate Change Secretariat, Singapore (NCCS) asserted that the implementation of the atlas should “translate to actual action on the ground... to better support decision-making, and to give corporations greater assurance to invest in a certain country.” By July 2025, the atlas will add 10 more countries to the portal, including major emitters like the US, China, and Australia, with the ultimate aim of growing the database to reflect mitigation data and potential around the world. In an effort to conserve marine life and safeguard coastlines, Singapore has introduced “high-rise” tanks on St John’s Island to cultivate coral fragments. These vertical tank structures, nicknamed “coral HDBs” by the scientists, can house up to 3,600 coral fragments under precisely controlled conditions. Once these corals reach a healthy size, approximately 100,000 will be transplanted onto degraded reefs or vacant sea spaces to create new reef habitats. Dr Lionel Ng, a Research Fellow at the NUS Tropical Marine Science Institute, noted that transplanted corals boast an 80-90 per cent survival rate, comparable to those found in the wild. Equipped with a smart monitoring system, researchers can remotely monitor tank conditions and receive alerts for any issues requiring intervention. Funded by over $2 million from various donors, this project also focuses on growing species under the National Parks Board (NParks)’s species recovery programme. Looking ahead, the initiative plans to expand by involving marine enthusiasts in coral cultivation and monitoring, with training provided by NParks, National Marine Laboratory, St John's Island (SJINML), and the Friends of Marine Park community. Cambridge CARES is leading two $31 million research projects focused on reducing fossil fuel dependence in Singapore’s chemical and energy sectors. These initiatives are part of a $90 million programme by the National Research Foundation Singapore (NRF) to decarbonise the country's industries. One project is centred on harnessing hydrogen and ammonia for power generation, as well as their application in aviation and maritime industries, with a focus on minimising emissions like nitrous oxide. The other project focuses on developing methods to convert fossil-free materials into chemical products, reducing the industry’s reliance on unsustainable, fossil-based processes. It will also leverage robotics and machine learning to enhance production efficiency. Professor Markus Kraft, director at Cambridge Cares, highlighted the potential of these projects to catalyse significant progress, “With the new projects, I anticipate we will be able to catalyse our research to create a greater impact in Singapore, such as transferring our knowledge and results to industry and generating new partnerships with maritime, energy and chemical companies.” The research is set to drive innovation in hydrogen utilisation, cleaner fuels, and decarbonisation strategies across industries, aligning with Singapore’s goal of having at least nine hydrogen-ready power plants by 2030. The COP29 Azerbaijan climate conference marked a major milestone with developed nations committing to channel at least US$300 billion annually by 2035 to support green initiatives in developing countries—an increase from the previous US$100 billion target. This new commitment aims to empower these nations in implementing climate plans and setting more ambitious emissions-reduction goals. Minister for Sustainability and the Environment, Grace Fu, underscored the critical role of funding and technology in achieving climate targets. “For Singapore, we are very focused on achieving our climate goals and effective implementation. But we also want to see the global community equally committed to their targets,” she shared in a recent episode of The Straits Times’ Green Pulse podcast. The agreement also seeks to raise US$1.3 trillion annually from diverse sources, including private investments, to drive climate action—particularly in Southeast Asia, which requires significant investment to address its climate challenges. Singapore and Thailand are exploring collaboration on food security, carbon credits and energy resilience. During a joint press conference in Bangkok, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra highlighted opportunities to advance the green economy and deepen bilateral cooperation. Both countries aim to work towards an implementation agreement on carbon credits collaboration, following Thailand’s increased green power production from sources such as hydrogen and biofuels. The leaders also highlighted the need to accelerate the integration of the ASEAN economies, with a focus on digital connectivity and the development of an ASEAN power grid. Prime Minister Lawrence Wong adds, “This will form the building block for a broader ASEAN power grid, which can help to strengthen our energy resilience and sustainability.” Furthering regional collaboration, Singapore will offer scholarships to Thai civil servants for master’s programmes, fostering mutual learning and the exchange of best practices across ASEAN. Malaysia and Singapore have reaffirmed their commitment to conserving marine biodiversity in the Johor Strait through joint efforts, such as water quality monitoring and the sharing of ecological information. These initiatives, announced during the 33rd Malaysia-Singapore Annual Exchange of Visits on November 27, aim to address environmental challenges like nutrient pollution caused by land reclamation and unsustainable aquaculture farming practices. Minister for Sustainability and the Environment Grace Fu and Malaysia’s Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Mr Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad commended the bilateral collaboration, particularly in oil spill responses, citing the June 2024 cleanup as a success. They also emphasised the importance of joint exercises in ensuring swift and efficient responses, with Singapore set to host the next exercise in 2025. The two countries further plan to enhance policies to reduce vehicular emissions and improve air quality, while exploring collaborative initiatives in areas such as the circular economy and building climate resilience. With Singapore pursuing its net-zero carbon emissions target by 2050, the power sector—responsible for 40% of the nation’s carbon emissions—plays a pivotal role in this journey through the “four switches” approach: natural gas, solar energy, regional power import and low-carbon alternatives. During Singapore International Energy Week (SIEW) 2024, CEO of Geneco SG and Deputy CEO at YTL PowerSeraya, Lim Han Kwang, joined MONEY FM 89.3’s Michelle Martin in the third episode of #SIEWCast to share more about how Geneco SG and our parent company, YTL PowerSeraya, are investing in greener solutions to support the Singapore Energy Transition roadmap and provide greener options for customers. One significant project highlighted was YTL PowerSeraya’s investment of over $5 million in 2023 to install an additional 4MWp (megawatt-peak) of solar PV capacity at the Pulau Seraya Power Station, bringing its total capacity to 5MWp. Mr Lim noted, “This additional solar PV system can generate about 417 megawatts of power, enough to power about 1,265 4-room HDB flats for a month.” Check out MONEYFM’s LinkedIn post below to learn more about the interview.
