Empowering Sarawak’s economy through Innovation & partnerships
Last week, I had the privilege of meeting with our Sarawak partners, stakeholders, and media at our TechTarik Series - a casual conversation on impactful tech.
It was a great experience that reaffirmed a core truth: innovation isn’t always about technology, it's about people. Behind every app feature, marketing campaign, or business strategy are real lives transformed by the power of technology.
Since Grab’s launch in Sarawak in 2014, we’ve created earning opportunities for over 40,000 local driver-partners, including more than 60 Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) and over 700 women. In 2023 alone, these partners collectively earned over RM10 million through our platform. But numbers only tell part of the story—what truly inspires me are the personal journeys behind them.
Here are just a few of the many stories that remind us why we do what we do:
💡 Sharipah Mazenah: At 59, this retired teacher became a Grab e-hailing driver, embracing the flexibility to stay active, support her family, and save for her future.
💡 Faizarino Bin Abu Bakar: From inspection officer to full-time delivery partner, Faizarino found a new way of life that offers financial stability and precious time with his family.
💡 Big Coconut: Once a single hawker stall, this homegrown business now thrives with eight outlets.
💡 Noms Signature: Starting from a humble food truck, Noms has grown to expanding across multiple cities in Sarawak.
These stories of resilience and empowerment are a testament to the immense potential of the digital economy when paired with the right tools and support.
At the TechTarik Series, we also looked to the future. Tourism is such a vibrant part of Sarawak’s identity, and I’m excited about how we can continue to showcase its unique culture, food, and experiences through collaborative innovation.
I hope these conversations spark new ideas and partnerships as we work together to uplift communities and drive inclusive growth. When we empower individuals, we transform entire ecosystems.
