[𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵] In the latest episode of 𝑺𝑴𝑰 𝑯𝒐𝒓𝒊𝒛𝒐𝒏, Mr Yee Wei Loh, Senior Manager (R&D) of the Singapore Maritime Institute (SMI), had the pleasure to speak with Professor Adam Sobey, Programme Director of Data Centric Engineering at The Alan Turing Institute. Professor Sobey discussed how advancements in data science, machine learning, and artificial intelligence (AI) are transforming engineering. He shared how his work involves shaping innovative solutions for industry challenges, from leveraging vast datasets to realigning skillsets. Professor Sobey further emphasised the importance of long-term partnerships across academia, startups, and industry players which will enable meaningful research translation into industry-ready solutions. He also highlighted the necessity of "assurable AI" in maritime – ensuring robust and reliable AI systems for safety and efficiency. Professor Sobey lauded the vibrant research ecosystem in Singapore and expressed optimism about future UK-Singapore collaborations in AI for maritime. An accomplished scholar and volunteer, he holds Master’s degrees from Imperial College London and Harvard. He received the Public Administration Medal (Silver) in 2021. Dr. Kah-Hin Chai is the Associate Provost for Masters’ Programmes and Lifelong Education, as well as the Vice Dean for the College of Design and Engineering’s Office of Graduate Programmes at NUS. His expertise spans energy efficiency, product & service innovation, and the maritime sector’s environmental challenges, such as GHG emissions in international shipping. Published in top journals, he serves on national committees for ISO 50001 and the SCEM Programme. Mr. Cyril Ducau is the CEO of Eastern Pacific Shipping (EPS), leading its green, tech-driven growth. With over 20 years’ experience in shipping and finance, he champions EPS’s strategy, profitability, and employee well-being. The 𝟭𝟰𝘁𝗵 𝗦𝗠𝗜 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝘂𝗺 concluded successfully yesterday, bringing together industry leaders, researchers, and government representatives to chart a course for maritime's digital and green future. Under the theme “𝗡𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲”, the SMI Forum explored the interplay between digitalisation and environmental sustainability in the maritime industry. From panel discussions to research insights, participants delved into the critical role of digitalisation, sustainability, talent development and collaboration to drive maritime innovation. 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗱: • A TED-talk session with Mr Eng Dih Teo , Chief Executive of the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), where Mr Teo engaged the audience, addressing questions on present maritime challenges and future plans to support tech and innovation. • A keynote presentation by Professor Adam Sobey of The Alan Turing Institute on data-centric engineering to drive efficient global shipping. • Insightful panel discussions and research presentations where industry and academic leaders explored how digitalisation is transforming maritime operations, and charted pathways to achieve the 2050 net-zero goals. SMI also announced the funding award for two projects led by A*STAR - Agency for Science, Technology and Research. One project, titled “Dispersion Analysis and Simulations for Handling (DASH) of Future Fuels,” is led and hosted by Institute of High Performance Computing (IHPC). SMI also awarded funding for the project “Subsea Cable Sensing for Anomaly Detection and Tide Sensing”, led by Institute for Infocomm Research. [𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵] SMI is excited to showcase our latest 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗦𝗽𝗼𝘁𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗼 featuring innovative projects in maritime decarbonisation. From advancing alternative fuels to pioneering vessel electrification, these initiatives are paving the way for new industry standards and a sustainable maritime future. 🌱 𝗕𝗶𝗼𝗳𝘂𝗲𝗹𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗣𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹: A research team at the Maritime Energy & Sustainable Development Centre of Excellence (MESD) at Nanyang Technological University Singapore, led by Dr Imran Halimi Bin Ibrahim, alongside Dr Dexter Lay and Ms Nazihah Binte Md Shariff, investigates the potential of biodiesel blends as a sustainable marine fuel. Their research, which combines laboratory testing, sea trials, and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations, demonstrates that B100 biodiesel could provide a reliable and renewable alternative for powering large harbour craft. 🚢 𝗗𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗧𝘄𝗶𝗻 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗘𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰 𝗛𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗖𝗿𝗮𝗳𝘁: In partnership with SeaTech Solutions International (SSI) and Yinson GreenTech, Dr Bhushan Taskar and Dr Ravindra Babu Kudupudi from TCOMS - Technology Centre for Offshore and Marine, Singapore worked with Dr Zhi Yung TAY, Ph.D from the Singapore Institute of Technology to develop a digital twin of the Hydromover, Singapore's first fully electric cargo vessel. 𝗜𝗻𝗮𝘂𝗴𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝗦𝗔 𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝘂𝗺: 𝗔 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝗧𝗼𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 On October 30th 2024, we held the fully subscribed inaugural Decarbonization Forum, organized by the SSA Decarbonization Committee, chaired by SSA Council Member Lee Keng Lin. The forum was an opportunity to engage with industry leaders as we gear up for Singapore’s 2030 goal to have all new harbour craft fully electric or be compatible with cleaner biofuels and net-zero fuels. The forum brought together experts to discuss actionable strategies for transitioning to greener alternatives in maritime operations. Here’s a recap of the key highlights: 🔹 Welcome Remarks by Keng Lin Lee 李庆仁, Chairman of the Decarbonization Committee that set the stage for a dynamic exchange on Singapore’s pathway to maritime sustainability. 🔹 Wei Siang New and Chin Beng ONG from Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) shared on the necessary infrastructure and standards for harbourcraft decarbonization and the importance of strengthening cybersecurity across the maritime sector. 🔹Capt Chatur Wahyu of Singapore Maritime Academy Club (SMAC) underscored the importance of a decarbonization talent pipeline and seafarer training to achieve a sustainable future. 🔹 Jan Viggo Johansen from Yinson GreenTech delved into electrification’s role in creating a carbon-free maritime sector. 🔹 Hanyu翰玉 S. from Singapore Maritime Institute (SMI) presented research innovations pioneering Singapore’s maritime decarbonization. 🔹 Prabjot Chopra from SeaTech Solutions International (SSI) presented sustainable green harbourfront, pushing boundaries in vessel sustainability. 🔹 Ronita Dutta from Paia Consulting, mapped out risk management roadmap for the transport and logistics sectors to make informed and sustainable decisions. Earlier today, SMI, together with a research team from the Singapore Institute of Technology leading the Future Ship & Systems Design (FSSD) programme, visited the Singapore Civil Defence Force Fire Research Centre and their advanced battery fire testing facilities. With the growing interest in electric harbour craft to support Singapore's maritime net-zero ambitions, the capability to safely integrate marinized batteries is essential for driving the transformation. The SCDF team’s expertise in battery fire research presents promising advancements for enhancing the safety of these innovative vessels. Through rigorous testing and analysis of battery fire behavior, SCDF contributes to the development of safety protocols, which are crucial for reducing maritime emissions while prioritising safety. The SCDF Fire Research Centre’s dedication to advancing safety in battery technology is a key enabler in Singapore’s sustainable maritime future.
