The author Wahyudi Soeriaatmadja has rightly pointed out the problem in the following paragraph! "The challenges faced by these two early Indonesian unicorns GoTo Group & Bukalapak underline problems in the country’s tech start-up landscape, observers have noted. Scores of Indonesian tech companies failed in the early stages, they say, due to a heavy reliance on providing copycat services, a lack of technological innovation, and offering services for which there is a lack of demand." Right from the beginning at Mother Venture Pte. Ltd. we insisted that we would look for startup ideas in Sumatra that are not into Ecommerce, Online learning and Aggregation platforms as they are not in the focus to spur innovation in Sumatra region! The VC ecosystem in Indonesia is also a by-product of conglomerated family businesses whose successors after studying overseas return to start a VC firm without much experience in innovation and entrepreneurship that exists in matured ecosystems in EU and US. The focus and efforts should be to create something entirely new as a product in Indonesia than just trying to be copycats to pour money to artificially bloat the valuations. For innovation to happen, it requires product, passion, perseverance and perspiration not just investments and valuations! Our efforts with "Startup Sumatra" would be to nurture such talents so that the ecosystem, if and when it matures, will have inherent strength to keep itself relevant in the startup world. Indonesian Government has to make it attractive (regulatory and tax reforms) for global founders to setup shop in specific locations that helps local talent to co-found startups that have the potential to go regional and global.
