It’s been a year since our operational ‘SINGV-DA’ numerical weather prediction (NWP) system upgrade went live, with a host of science upgrades such as improved representation of clouds and assimilation of Himawari-9 satellite observations. After a full year of performance monitoring, we are glad to share that the upgrade has brought much-improved skill for: 🌏 Light and heavy rainfall forecasts over the whole SINGV-DA domain 🌏 Wind forecasts over Singapore With improved prediction of heavy rainfall, SINGV-DA can now better support forecasts of extreme rainfall events to inform decision-making. Vision: All vehicles to run on cleaner energy by 2040!   To continue encouraging the adoption of cleaner commercial vehicles, NEA and the Land Transport Authority (LTA) Singapore have extended the Commercial Vehicle Emissions Scheme for light commercial vehicles and Early Turnover Scheme for heavy commercial vehicles.   The extension of the above schemes reaffirms our support for efforts to improve Singapore’s air quality. We’re cans-istently looking to reduce our waste! ♻️🌍✨ From FY2022 to FY2023: - The public sector’s total waste disposed of increased by 1.3% as there was more activity at public sector facilities, but… - The waste disposed of per person decreased by 9.1%!   Waste data is not easy to collect as it is not metered like utilities such as electricity and water, but MSE has been working to enhance the reliability of the waste data collected by:   ✅ Tag teaming with National Environment Agency and working with our Public Waste Collectors (PWCs) like SembWaste, 800 Super Holdings Ltd, and ALBA to refine the waste data collection process. This has facilitated tracking of waste data at public sector facilities served by these PWCs. ✅ Piloting a waste collection system to measure the amount of waste generated by the various MSE Family agencies located in the Environment Building. Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and NEA were informed by Shell that they have shut down one of its oil processing units at the Shell Energy and Chemicals Park at Pulau Bukom, to facilitate investigation into a suspected leak in the system. The oil processing unit is used to produce refined oil products such as diesel. Water drawn from the sea is used as part of the process to cool the refined oil products in the unit. Shell estimated that a few tonnes of the refined oil products were leaked, together with the cooling water discharge. Shell has laid containment and absorbent booms and sprayed dispersants in the channel where the cooling water is being discharged. The in-built oil skimmer system in the channel has also been activated. Containment and absorbent booms have been laid at the mouth of the channel, to prevent residual oil leaked from spreading into the sea. No oil patches are currently observed in the vicinity of Pulau Bukom. MPA and Shell have deployed boats to clean up light oil sheens observed off Pulau Bukom using both dispersants and absorbent booms. Agencies are closely monitoring the situation and have deployed satellites and drones for surveillance. As a precaution, oil absorbent booms will be laid at Sisters' Islands Marine Park and at the beaches on Sentosa. Navigational traffic in the area is not affected. There is no impact to bunkering operations in the Port of Singapore. Further updates will be provided if there are significant developments. NEA is investigating the incident with MPA and will not hesitate to take enforcement action if any wrongdoing or lapse is discovered. Photo credit: Shell
