Increasing workplace happiness can lead to increase team productivity? Fact or myth? I personally keep track of all my team members’ birthday and try to make each celebration as personal as possible. 🎂 Celebrating my team member’s birthday is as important as a networking session or a client meeting. A birthday is a milestone moment. Team members may use this moment to take stock of their life; they might realise another year has passed and if they’re dissatisfied, they might move on. It’s also not just about the celebration, it’s about recognising their contributions to the team and making them feel valued. Celebrating a birthday at work creates a happy environment in general. Taking time out for a joyful occasion can help reduce stress and burnout. Taking a break from the daily grind to have some fun reinforces feelings of positivity towards the company. Sometimes it’s the little things that mean the most. Gratitude 🤝 It never came across to me during my student days that I would join the taxation industry. I completed my national service in 2009 and the job market was bleak due to the collapse of Lehman Brothers. To my surprise, I got an attractive offer from IRAS and the availability of a direct express bus from Pasir Ris to Novena made me put the pen on the paper (I was a very poor ORD personnel and cheap transportation was important). One of the aspects IRAS trained me well was e-filing individual income taxes. I was involved in training student volunteers from Temasek Polytechnic and together with these students, we were deployed to the various community centres to provide e-filing services for members of the public. Taxation has given me a great livelihood so much so when I started my practice, I wanted giving back to the community part of our firm’s DNA. For the third year running, I am grateful that this tax e-filing clinic that we organise with community volunteers, continues to be a blessing to some members of the public and I take joy in assisting them with their tax filings.
