I had the great pleasure of representing South Pole in moderating a panel titled "Building Sustainable Value Chain Through Collaboration" last week, at the invitation of Process Innovation Asia Pacific Powered by ACHEMA. I was joined on stage by four distinguished experts in the petrochemical & materials space, each with a unique perspective to share on the paramount role of existing & new partnerships in closing circularity loops in process-heavy sectors, especially in Southeast Asia. Here are some key takeaways: 1. A strong business case can already be established for recycling and upcycling of some industrial materials and chemicals, and should be a primary motivator for more widespread adoption of circularity across heavy industries. Positive regulatory development, for example in mandating minimum recycled content and establishing extended producer responsibility (EPR) frameworks, is key to inducing further demand. 2. Physical infrastructure and finance remain major roadblocks, especially in Southeast Asia where there is great disparity among markets. Even in more mature parts of the region, the right support is still needed to catalyse circular economy activities e.g., mechanisms for waste sorting. 3. Recycling, reusing and reducing are socio-cultural; valorisation of waste streams begins at source-level segregation, and every producer, retail or industrial-scale, has a role to play. Education and capacity-building are key, led especially by local communities and NGOs, but legislative mandates must supplement where a cultural gap remains. As the global process manufacturing landscape continues to evolve, keeping up with emerging trends is vital. I had the opportunity to deliver the opening keynote Process Innovation Asia Pacific Powered by ACHEMA, where I presented an overview of global market dynamics and trends in both the petrochemical and life sciences sectors. Connecting with industry leaders to discuss the evolving process manufacturing sector was incredibly rewarding. We explored a wide range of factors, from technological advancements to shifting consumer demands, that are shaping the future of global market dynamics and opening new opportunities for the chemicals and pharmaceutical industries.
