Featured in a comprehensive two-page spread by The Straits Times, the forum focused on: - Urban Heat: Addressing rising temperatures in cities. - Heat at Work: Safeguarding workers in extreme conditions. - Traditional & Cultural Perspectives: Leveraging local knowledge for heat resilience strategies. We're incredibly proud of our colleague Assoc Prof Jason Kai Wei LEE and his team at Heat Resilience & Performance Centre (HRPC)! Their groundbreaking work is helping tackle Southeast Asia’s escalating heat crisis through collaborative, interdisciplinary solutions. At the Global Heat Health Information Network South-East Asia Heat Health Forum, Assoc Prof Lee outlined the centre’s vital role in building a regional network to address heat resilience, especially with the region's increasing temperatures and urban heat risks. Maintaining healthcare sustainability is complex, requiring action on all fronts—especially when it involves understanding the intricate links between climate, environmental change, and health. The region’s heat crisis not only exacerbates health risks but also creates opportunities for coordinated regional responses to drive meaningful system changes, ensuring the long-term sustainability of healthcare. It was a fruitful and insightful discussion and sharing on ageing, chronic disease and disabilities in our breakout session! Thank you Reshma Merchant for moderating the session. I shared the current state of evidence on medication effects on thermoregulation and what it means for medication prescription guidelines 💊 My fellow esteemed speakers 🎤 included: 1) Ms. Jinah Park, PhD Student, Public Health Sciences, Seoul National University o Presentation title: Higher heat impact on people with disabilities in South Korea: How to make policy more inclusive? 2) Zhiwei Xu , Research Fellow, School of Medicine and Dentistry, Griffith University o Presentation title: The development and pilot testing of an individualised heat early warning system in Queensland, Australia

Great end of day 1 at the First GHHIN Southeast Asia Heat Health Forum! The Heat and Policy Expert Roundtable Discussion on the need for robust heat policies across regional, national, and local levels, was moderated by Joel Aik (NUS) and featured Li-Na Koh, Director General of Meteorological Services (National Environment Agency of Singapore), Ridwan Sobri Carman, Director, Disaster Management, Palang Merah Indonesia (Indonesian Red Cross Society) and Eduardo Banzon, Director, Health Practice Team, Human and Social Development Sector Office, Asian Development Bank. Then a fantastic Keynote Address by Prof Winston Chow on strategies for urban heat resilience and building sustainable cities followed by an Insights Talk on Future Climate Projections for Southeast Asia by Aurel Moise, shedding light on what lies ahead for the Southeast Asian region. The day closed with a thought-provoking Panel on Addressing urban heat vulnerabilities and enhancing adaptation strategies, with insights from global experts in architecture, climate science, and urban planning. It was moderated by Nicholas Ravanelli (NUS) and featured Benjamin William (Singapore Red Cross) Stefano Schiavon (UC Berkeley) Wen Tung Chiu (Singapore's Urban Redevelopment Authority). In today's The Straits Times, we explore how increasingly hot weather is affecting outdoor workers in Singapore. It's a package that took a while to put together because it involved speaking to a range of workers, their employers, government agencies and scientists. Outdoor workers are incredibly vulnerable and heat is taking a growing toll of many of them, from construction crews to food delivery riders. The good news is that some fairly simple steps, such as regular rest breaks to access to cooling drinks and shaded areas, can reduce some of the risks. The government here has rolled out a range of mandatory and recommended steps for employers. But as the mercury keeps rising, the risks will only grow and that will affect all of us because we rely so much on the jobs these workers do every day. My colleague Shabana Begum D/O Nazeer looks at the construction sector and how acclimatisation programmes help new workers or those returning from leave to gradually adjust to the tropical heat. Shabana and Elise Wong also look at how security guards are affected by the heat. I talked to motorcycle delivery riders, many of whom are struggling with the twin challenges of rising heat and longer hours to make ends meet. This is a dangerous mix because riders can easily become fatigued and this affects their judgement and raises the risks of heat injury or an accident on the road. Thanks to Yufeng Kok for helping out on this story. This group is also highly vulnerable because government-mandated steps to protect workers on very hot days are much harder to enforce for riders, who are highly mobile and driven to complete as many deliveries as they can each day. I also look at port workers, another vulnerable group, such as engineers who service the giant cranes that load and unload containers, and the lashing crews that secure and release the containers on the ships. He gave us excellent insights into the risks from heat and a reality check on how much we still have to learn from how it affects workers and how best to protect them.
