About us

The Singapore Institute of Arbitrators is an independent professional body established in 1981. Presently, we have almost 1000 members, with three major categories of membership - Associate, Member and Fellow. Many of our members are practising professionals from a wide spectrum of diversified backgrounds like, Architects, Certified Public Accountants, CEOs, Dispute Resolution Consultants, Doctors, Engineers, Lawyers, Lecturers, present & former High Court Judges, Marine Surveyors, Naval Architects, Project Managers, Property Managers, Shipbrokers, Queen Counsels, Senior Counsels, Senior Government Officials, Quantity Surveyors etc. Many of them are also directly and indirectly involved in the dispute resolution procedures as Arbitrators, Mediators, Expert Witnesses and Consultants. Our members are also geographically represented throughout the world. We are a truly neutral professional body with no link or affiliation to any particular industry but bonded together with a common interest in arbitration & other alternative dispute resolution procedures. Our main focus is in the aspect of professional training & development. We organise talks, seminars and training courses for members and the public on a regular basis. Besides being a centre for promoting knowledge of arbitration & other ADRs, we also act as an appointing authority for the appointment of arbitrators upon requests. We also work closely with the Singapore International Arbitration Centre.

  • On 25 February 2025, over 100 participants online and on-site attended the Singapore Institute of Arbitrators’ (SIArb) Annual Seminar on the Developments in Singapore Arbitration 2025. This seminar was particularly memorable as Prof Lawrence Boo gave a farewell speech as this seminar was his final appearance in this annual seminar series examining the Singapore cases on arbitration. We are grateful for contributions over the years in shaping discussions and sharing his insight on the developments of the case law in arbitration in Singapore. Highlights of the seminar included: - the examination of cases relating to stay of proceedings under s 6 of the Arbitration Act. There have been no cases relating to stay under the International Arbitration Act, suggesting perhaps that these cases were fairly settled; - Singapore courts examining negative jurisdiction findings by tribunals; - Discussion on making of conditional awards; and - Best practices for tribunals to consider based on the learning points from cases on the setting aside of arbitral awards. A big thank you to all our speakers, Professor Lawrence Boo and Delphine Ho and our Chairperson Cathryn Neo, FCIArb FSIArb, and all attendees for making this seminar a success! #SIArb #internationalarbitration #arbitration

  • “This House Believes That Multi-Tiered Dispute Resolution Clauses Hinder the Finality of Disputes” Do multi-tiered dispute resolution clauses offer a meaningful opportunity for resolution, or do they merely delay the finality of disputes and add procedural hurdles? This was the motion debated on the rainy evening of 26 November, before a packed audience. The Singapore Institute of Arbitrators (SIArb) Annual Debate 2024, presented by the SIArb Young Practitioners Network (YPN), kicked off with an introduction by the YPN Co-Chairpersons, Ms Toh Jia Yi (Allen & Gledhill) and Ms Arias Lim (K&L Gates Straits Law) and the debate moderator, Mr Julian Lim (Ashurst). Ms Helen Wang (Carey Olsen) and Mr Oliver Watts (Osborne Partners) argued for the motion, while Mr Andrew Raymond (Watson Farley Williams) and Ms Jennifer Lim (Duxton Hill Chambers) opposed the motion. With references to bicycles, client experience and Dr Seuss quotes – the audience was treated to an entertaining evening. That is not to say it was all fun and games! The debaters also went all out in citing case law, defining what it means to achieve “finality” in dispute resolution, and throwing in statistics to support their positions. Our panel of judges, Mr Ramesh Selvaraj (Allen & Gledhill), Mr Raja Bose (K&L Gates Straits Law) and Ms Tian-Yi Tan (Standard Chartered Bank) also challenged the debaters, inviting the teams’ perspectives in relation to costs, balancing of risks and use of model clauses before delivering their verdict. The verdict? The opposition prevailed - but we’re certain both teams settled their differences with rounds of canapes and drinks sponsored by K&L Gates Straits Law as the annual flagship event for the SIArb drew to a close. Co-Chairs: Jia Yi Toh (杜佳怡) and Arias Lim Jie Moderator: Julian Lim Debaters: Helen Wang, Oliver Watts, Andrew Raymond, Jennifer Lim Judges: Ramesh Selvaraj, Raja Bose, Tian-Yi Tan Event Partner: K&L Gates Supporting Organisation: YSIAC

  • Join us at the SIArb Annual Debate 2024 on Tuesday, 26 November 2024, where we’ll tackle the motion: "This House Believes That Multi-Tiered Dispute Resolution Clauses Hinder the Finality of Disputes." Multi-tiered clauses are commonly found in commercial contracts today, offering various alternative dispute resolution (ADR) mechanisms like mediation and expert determination before arbitration. But do these clauses streamline dispute resolution or merely create delays? Join our panel of arbitration counsel, experts and in-house counsel for an evening of lively conversation, networking, and debate hosted at K&L Gates Straits Law LLC. Registration closes on 19 November 2024, so be sure to secure your spot! • The SIArb Young Practitioners Network (YPN) was pleased to collaborate with the NUS Centre for Future Ready Graduates on 2 October 2024 in its event “Arbitration Unveiled: A Young Practitioner’s Journey”.   The YPN gathered a panel of arbitration practitioners in various careers to share with over 40 NUS law school students on the various paths one can take in arbitration. Speakers reflected on how they took their first steps into the arbitration world, how they navigated challenges, the contrast between court work and arbitration as well as the differences between an in-house and a practitioner role.   The YPN is grateful to our panel of speakers as well as NUS for this collaboration.   Moderator: [Wee Jian ANG] Speakers: [Alessa Pang] [Cathryn Neo, FCIArb FSIArb] [Damien Yeo] [Jun Hong Tan] [Sherly Gunawan, FCIArb]   #SIArb #SIArbYPN #internationalarbitration #careersinarbitration
