Recent advancements in genomic medicine have brought to light a remarkable case study involving a young boy who faced a life-threatening condition.   Dr Saumya Jamuar, Director, #SingHealth Duke-NUS Institute of Precision Medicine (PRISM), and Senior Consultant, Paediatrics & Genetics Service, KK Women's and Children's Hospital, has shared this extraordinary instance where the patient's own genetic mutation, initially perceived as detrimental, ultimately became the source of his cure.   This case exemplifies the transformative potential of #genetic #research in #healthcare. Through comprehensive genomic analysis, clinicians were able to identify a unique characteristic in the boy's DNA. 🧠 A new perspective on #scoliosis: Could the brain hold the key to this spine condition? A breakthrough study by Singapore General Hospital and National Neuroscience Institute found that adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) patients show asymmetry in brain pathways and enlargement in the brainstem, unlike individuals without the condition. This discovery, made using high-resolution MRI, could reshape AIS diagnosis and treatment, potentially introducing neurological interventions to prevent spine curvature from worsening. AIS affects 3% of adolescents in Singapore, predominantly girls, with most managing their condition through bracing and physiotherapy. SGH’s scoliosis clinic supports over 300 patients yearly in improving mobility and managing progression. Two #research programmes led by National Cancer Centre Singapore (NCCS) — SYMPHONY 2.0 and Colo-SCRIPT — have been awarded $25M each under The National Medical Research Council (NMRC) Open Fund-Large Collaborative Grant. These multi-institution efforts unite NCCS, A*STAR - Agency for Science, Technology and Research, and the Cancer Science Institute of Singapore in tackling #lymphoma and #colorectalcancer (CRC). SYMPHONY 2.0 harnesses #AI to optimise drug combinations for relapsed lymphoma, improve CAR-T therapy access, and build a Lymphoma Atlas (a centralised database to collect, integrate, and organise comprehensive patient data related to lymphoma.) Meanwhile, Colo-SCRIPT, Singapore's first national CRC study, focuses on subtype-specific approaches, aiming to revolutionise diagnostics, early intervention, and treatment strategies for CRC, the country’s most common cancer. Last Saturday marked a milestone as the #SingHealth Duke-NUS Spine Centre and the Asian Oceanian Society of Intraoperative Neurophysiology (AOSIN) partnered to host the Intraoperative Neuromonitoring (IONM) symposium.    This collaborative effort brought together a diverse group of #healthcare professionals, #researchers, and #neurotechnologists. The event provided a platform to showcase innovative IONM techniques, foster cross-border collaboration and share cutting-edge knowledge in the field of Intraoperative Neuromonitoring. Participants delved into the potential of these developments to enhance patient safety in both #neurosurgery and #spinesurgery. For the first time, legal and cost-benefit aspects were also discussed.   The event not only highlighted current advancements in the field but has also set the stage for shaping the future of IONM in the region. #intraoperativeneuromonitoring

What do drumming performances, green spaces and artificial intelligence have in common?   While seemingly unrelated,  they work together to improve health outcomes amongst our residents. By tackling issues such as social isolation, designing physical spaces to promote healthier lifestyles, and empowering health and social care professionals to leverage new technologies and innovative approaches, we can better address the #healthcare challenges of today and the future.   We are pleased to share that SingHealth Community Hospitals (SCH) has been designated as the World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborating Centre for Social Prescribing – the first of its kind in the world. In partnership with WHO, SCH will advance #socialprescribing globally in the areas of capacity building, collaboration, and #research.   #SingHealth has also signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS) and the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) to collectively address critical areas in #populationhealth such as ageing-in-place, brain health and cognition, and social isolation.   These key events took place at the inaugural Asia Pacific Population Health Conference and the 2nd Asia Pacific Social Prescribing Conference. Organised by SingHealth, SUSS and SUTD, the conferences explored innovative approaches to make our cities more age-friendly and inclusive towards a healthier future for urban populations worldwide.
