  • Considering a future in taxation? Watch as this accredited tax professional sheds light on her rewarding and dynamic career path and be inspired to make an impact through tax as well!

When a non-tax person thinks of tax, they immediately associate it with numbers, computations and probably the collection of tax dues. So, what does a tax professional really do? Let’s see… a bridge, a translator in whatever language it takes to get the job done, a data chaser, a friend, lifelong buddy.  Ring a bell or what other roles do you have in mind? Pop them into the comments section! Broadly, the tax profession primarily comprises tax advisors in practice or in-house, assisting clients or companies respectively navigate the tax terrain wherever their presence is in. Let’s hear from Accredited Tax Advisor (Income Tax & GST) Vimala Devi on what a tax career entails. Links to the earlier two posts on other aspects Vimala has shared on her tax journey:  Part 1: https://bit.ly/SctpVimala1  Part 2: https://bit.ly/SCTPVimala2 #TaxRocks #Taxation #TaxCareer #CareerAdvice #TransferPricing #InternationalTax #SCTP

A tax career is not just about tax. The problem solving skills, the systematic thinking ability and people skills you pick up are invaluable in your own self development journey. Thus, the question is not why does one join the tax profession. It is about why would one not join the tax profession? Things get tough in the first year upon graduation. Nobody denies that. BUT it gets better. A big thanks to Candy Chng, Richard Goh and Sivakumar Saravan for their very personal and frank sharing that were truly from the heart and taking the hot seat to answer sensitive questions on pay and possible long hours – issues that are in many students’ minds but not usually voiced out. A super appreciative shout-out to the President of SMU Tax Society, Evonne Yang, for partnering the Singapore Chartered Tax Professionals to organise this fruitful networking session for the accountancy students to hear the real stories from within. Thank you to the tax professionals present for joining in on a Friday evening and sharing your experiences with the tax leaders of tomorrow! What a blast!
