“Embedding gender-smart practices into financial institutions isn’t a one-time effort. It’s a journey—one that requires commitment, data-driven insights, and collaboration to ensure the impact is sustainable and transformative.” - Brianna Losoya-Evora, Sweef Capital. Our session at #BuildingBridges2024, ‘Bridging the Gap: Advancing Gender-Smart Finance in Latin America, Africa, and Asia,’ offered a refreshing perspective on how financial institutions are driving meaningful change through gender-smart initiatives. This conversation emphasised that embedding gender-smart principles into the core of financial institutions is an ongoing journey—one that requires unwavering commitment, strategic focus, and long-term dedication. With U.S. International Development Finance Corporation's support, fortunate to collaborate with an inspiring consortium of partners, ProMujer and Equilo, sharing our journey towards building more inclusive, impactful, and gender-equitable financial systems. Throughout the session, we explored the practical application of tools like the Gender ROI™ and its automated action plans, highlighting DFC’s continued commitment to investing in women—and in clients who invest in women. This work has provided a roadmap for financial institutions to align their strategies with gender-focused goals, ensuring that gender equality remains a top priority in organisational decision-making, even as the global landscape continues to evolve. The detailed examples our financial institution partners provided painted a clear picture of why this work matters. “This work is not about short-term wins. It’s about embedding gender inclusion into every aspect of an institution—top-down and bottom-up—so that it becomes part of the culture, part of the DNA.” - Alexa Foglia, Senior Vice President, Banco Atlantida. While significant challenges remain, the tangible progress being made in advancing gender-smart finance demonstrates its potential to drive both social and economic transformation. Rather than being sidelined by misconceptions or resistance, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) must be recognized as a powerful enabler of business growth and community resilience. Achieving meaningful change requires sustained investment, clear strategies, and committed leadership within organizations. A massive thank you to everyone who joined us on December 11th— The conversations at #BuildingBridges24 are shaping the future of global finance and driving the dialogues that will lead to lasting change. It was an insightful day spent connecting with entrepreneurs and discussing how Sweef Capital supports startups and SMEs in Indonesia. During the panel discussion, Samantha delved into Sweef Capital's focus on empowering startups with innovative solutions. She talked about how Indonesia's thriving ecosystem - bolstered by coworking spaces, accelerators, and various support programs - is fuelling the growth of startups and SMEs. Samantha also shared what investors look for: a large market, strong founders, and product-market fit. She emphasised the importance of networking and how building relationships within the ecosystem can unlock growth and collaboration opportunities. Samantha also had the opportunity to mentor six driven women entrepreneurs during the Speed Dating session, offering personalised, actionable advice to help them take their businesses to the next level. We were proud to have our Head of Impact Measurement and Management, Brianna Losoya-Evora, represent Sweef Capital at the GIIN Impact Forum 2024 during the session "Measuring Impact of Investments in Historically Marginalized Communities." The conversation was rich with insights on how IMM can be leveraged as a tool for expanding financial inclusion and uplifting historically underrepresented groups. Key takeaways from the session include: 🔸 A discussion on whether “marginalised communities” is the best term to use, with calls to reframe the narrative to elevate and empower historically excluded groups. 🔸 Brianna shared our proprietary Gender ROI™ framework, designed to holistically elevate women in leadership, entrepreneurship, and economic participation. Other panelists provided valuable insights into their own frameworks, sparking a collaborative exchange of ideas. 🔸 The panel explored barriers to progress, including ingrained stereotypes, the potential dangers individuals face when being open about their identities, and the critical need to consider intersectionality to avoid one-size-fits-all approaches. 🔸 A key conclusion was that while frameworks and disaggregated data are essential for tracking impact, the heart of this work is people. Human-centered storytelling and qualitative data are vital for capturing the real, lived experiences behind the numbers. 🔸 The session concluded with an interactive exercise focusing on mapping out current challenges, identifying opportunities, and envisioning a future where underrepresented voices are empowered to lead. We’re grateful for the opportunity to contribute to this important dialogue and thank all the panelists and participants for their thoughtful engagement. As we continue to strive for a more inclusive and resilient impact investing ecosystem, we’re committed to sharing our learnings and advancing practices that prioritize people, transparency, and holistic growth. #ImpactInvesting #SocialImpact #ImpactMeasurement Jessica Espinoza Edward Jackson Harriet Horsfall Elena Mayer-Besting Sara Diaz Christina Morrison Samantha Nicholl Rasmus Juhl Pedersen Serge LeVert-Chiasson, CFA Luke M.
