Curbing the Illicit Wildlife Trade: Shipping's Role in Shark Protection      🌊 On this World Maritime Day (26 September), we reflect on the vital role that shipping companies play in curbing the illicit shark fin trade—a significant threat to shark populations globally.    📊 A new report “A Review of Shipping Companies’ Carriage Policies on International Shark Fin Trade” by the Asia Pacific Counter-Illegal Wildlife Trade Hub and WWF-Hong Kong evaluates the impact of shipping bans on this trade. The findings reveal that the "No Shark Fin Carriage Policy" implemented by major shipping lines has contributed to a decline in Hong Kong's shark fin trade volumes.  🌍 However, it's important to note that changing consumer attitudes and global events also influence these trends. To maximise impact, the report emphasises the need for robust enforcement frameworks, standardised screening, and enhanced cooperation between shipping companies and conservation groups.     Full Report ➡️ https://lnkd.in/guDKu8k5 🤝 By working together, we can protect sharks and promote sustainability in our oceans. This timely research serves as a vital resource for policymakers, conservationists, and the industry—a beacon of hope in the fight to safeguard shark species.    Let's celebrate World Maritime Day by committing to a sustainable future for our oceans! The World Shipping Council has proposed the Green Balance Mechanism (GBM), an important step towards decarbonising the shipping industry. By imposing a fee on fossil fuels and allocating the funds to green fuels, the GBM creates a level playing field and drives further investments in sustainable energy.   Swire Shipping is committed to playing a role in this transition. We’ve implemented several decarbonisation initiatives, including: 🌍 Identifying new Energy Efficiency Technologies ⚓ Exploring the use of sustainable biofuels and other low-carbon alternatives 🤝🏻 Engaging and collaborating with industry partners on decarbonisation strategies 📉 Reducing operational emissions through efficiency measures     With the upcoming MEPC82 meeting taking place soon, we urge the IMO to consider the potential of the GBM as a tool in making more green energy projects financially viable and driving decarbonisation in the industry.   Jeremy Sutton, CEO of Swire Shipping, said, “The Green Balance Mechanism is an important step towards achieving the shipping industry’s decarbonisation goals. By offering a practical and effective solution, the GBM can drive significant emissions reductions and innovation. Swire Shipping is fully committed to supporting this initiative and taking action to reduce our environmental impact.” #GreenBalanceMechanism #climate #NetZero2050
