Those are some of the few topics tackled by the panellists (Melvin Loh, Susan Tay, Samantha Lek, and Li Jiabao) during the Law Society’s Young Mediator’s Sub-Committee (YMSC) Event on 7 December 2024: “Making a Difference – Panel Discussion for Aspiring Mediators”. The panel made up of professionals from a wide range of experience and backgrounds provided their thought-provoking insights on the mediation practice in Singapore as well as the benefits the practice has in facilitating the resolution of disputes. The event kicked off with an opening speech from The Law Society of Singapore Council Member Christine Low, where she emphasised the usefulness of mediation as a means for practitioners to empower and help others. Melvin Loh provided participants with an overview of the mediation landscape in Singapore, and how we are championing for mediation to be the ideal first port of call for dispute resolution. Susan Tay shared her extensive experience as a mediator and mediation advocate, and walked participants through the development of mediation over the past 30 years. From her perspective as the registrar at Sage Mediation, Samantha Lek highlighted the importance of quality mediation as well as the need for mediators to continue to hone their craft; especially when mediation has gained global popularity and momentum since the signing of the Singapore Convention on Mediation in 2019. In addressing the concerns and challenges faced by young mediators and mediation advocates, Jiabao Li encouraged practitioners and law students by sharing her journey in becoming a young mediator; from starting the SMU Mediation & Negotiation Club (SMNC) at SMU Yong Pung How School of Law to becoming a dispute resolution lawyer who continues to advocate mediation as an alternative dispute resolution mechanism. The YMSC (comprising of Melvin Loh, Walter Yeo, Charmaine Yap, Jiabao Li, and Samuel Chong) is part of the Law Society’s Mediation Committee led by co-chairpersons, Chern Yang See 徐振洋 and Yik Wee Liew. The YMSC aims to address the concerns and challenges faced by young mediators as well as to build a community for young mediators. A shout out to venue host, Drew & Napier LLC.

  • Today, we welcomed Mr Yang Chen, Vice President of the Beijing Lawyers Association (BLA), and his colleagues to the Law Society of Singapore. The visit was an excellent opportunity to exchange insights on mediation practices in Singapore and Beijing and discuss potential collaborations between law firms in both cities. We also explored ideas for joint initiatives, such as exchange programmes to benefit our members. A key moment of the day was the renewal of our Memorandum of Understanding with BLA. First signed in 2017 during a mission trip to Beijing, this renewed agreement reaffirms our shared commitment to working together and opens the door to even greater collaboration in the years ahead. We are excited to deepen our partnership with BLA and strengthen the bonds between our legal communities! • The Law Society of Singapore and the Jiangsu Lawyers Association have renewed their partnership with the signing of a second Memorandum of Understanding (“MOU”) yesterday in Nanjing, China, during the 18th Singapore-Jiangsu Cooperation Council Meeting. This followed the first MOU signed in 2019. Representing the Law Society, Vice President Boon Teck Chia formalised the partnership alongside Mr Che Jie, President of the Jiangsu Lawyers Association. This renewed MOU aims to foster meaningful exchanges between lawyers from both jurisdictions, offering opportunities for knowledge-sharing, training programmes, and networking. It also seeks to strengthen ties between the legal sectors of Singapore and Jiangsu, paving the way for mutual growth and closer cooperation on Belt and Road-related legal services. We are grateful to the Jiangsu Lawyers Association for their warm hospitality and meticulous planning, which made this occasion a resounding success. #LawSocietySG #InternationalRelations #Jiangsu #江苏省律师协会
