Our heartiest congratulations to Nyx O., Lutfiah Amani, Cedric Foo and Jerome Yeo, Junior Hospitality and Tourism Management students from the Temasek Polytechnic | School of Business who attained the Sands Hospitality Scholarship 2024. Accompanied by HTM lecturer Alexander Tang, they were presented with their scholarships by Mr. Paul Town, Chief Operating Officer of Marina Bay Sands at an awards ceremony on 14 November 2024. It was a fantastic time for our students to network with management staff and interns from various operations departments in Marina Bay Sands, as well as their peers from other polytechnics who were also receiving their award. The students got to know more about what it is like working in an Integrated Resort like Marina Bay Sands, and the career growth opportunities. Thank you Marina Bay Sands for the scholarships, and for hosting our students! 🌟 #TemasekPolytechnic #tpbizschool #TPCreatingTomorrow #MarinaBaySands

Last week, our students from the diplomas in Business, Hospitality & Tourism Management and Marketing had the privilege of learning from the inspiring team at Louis Vuitton. There was a sense of excitement in the air as they watched LV brand ambassadors like Gong Yoo, Lisa (Blackpink), BamBam (Got7) and many others on the big screen sharing their thoughts about the brand. We listened to the different career journeys taken by the speakers from LV and each of them shared about the values that helped shape their successful careers. Here are the key takeaways that left a lasting impression: ✨ Stay curious and agile: The retail and business world is always changing, and adaptability is key. Embrace challenges and don't be shy to ask questions. 🚀 Step out of your comfort zone: Do not be afraid of taking on new challenges. 🗣️ Speak up and keep an open mind: Don’t be afraid to share your thoughts. 🌞 Positivity is power: A positive mindset can turn challenges into opportunities and help you keep going when things get tough. The sharing about how LV manages challenging customers definitely kept the students captivated. 🙏 Stay humble: Every interaction is an opportunity to learn something new. Embracing this mindset helps one to grow, turning every connection into a step forward. 🎯 Set goals and plan your path: Visualise where you want to go and take active steps towards it. Where do you want to be in X years time? Plan how to get there! 🤝 Connect with new people: Networking opens doors. Talk to people outside your usual circle - you never know where the next great opportunity will come from. We were particularly inspired by the story of how a simple, chance conversation with a stranger completely changed someone’s life path! @louis vuitton A big thank you to the LV team for empowering our students with invaluable insights! Recently, our Course Chair, Adeline Goh, shared with Lianhe Zaobao that the rise in Singapore’s tourism receipts and visitor arrivals in Q2 2024 was driven by the recovery of international tourism, expanded flight connections, visa-free travel between Singapore and China, and increased leisure and business activities. She noted that Singapore is well-prepared for shifts in traveller preferences. Additionally, new leisure activities, hotels, conferences, exhibitions, and incentive travel will attract a more diverse range of tourists and support the long-term growth of Singapore’s tourism industry. Benjamin Cassim, our HTM Senior Lecturer, recently shared his thoughts with Lianhe Zaobao on the development of Marina Bay Sands' IR2. He suggested that the clientele could include company executives attending business events at MBS, luxury tourists, professionals in the sports and entertainment sectors, national leaders, and high-profile casino patrons. He noted that IR2's hotel tower consists entirely of suites, with the basic suite expected to generate a daily per capita spending between SGD 2,000 to SGD 3,000 for guests. Cassim also pointed out that luxury travellers are always looking for new experiences, so when IR2 opens, there will likely be a high demand from luxury travellers keen to try it out. HTM Junior student Erwin Eqmel, together with Imeldza Hazelynn, Bryan Ng and Nicholas Tan, got the unique opportunity to attend the F1 Singapore Grand Prix. Here is Erwin's post-event reflection: On 20th Sep 2024, HTM gave me a chance to attend the Singapore Grand Prix. I was stoked as it was my first time attending the event in person! 😍 Not only did I enjoy seeing the Formula 1 cars zooming pass the grandstands at unimaginable speed, it got me thinking about how major events as such was made possible. Many may think that it is all about the race, however, there is more to what meets the eye. Other than the race, we were able to roam around and enjoy various form of entertainment off-track. There were fan booths, food stalls and live entertainment. This added to the overall experience as it wasn't simply just looking at fast cars. I was also surprised by the sheer number of local fans and inbound tourists who travelled into Singapore just for the 3-day event. This large-scale event meant that hotels were at full capacity🏨, F&B places in the city would be busy feeding everyone🥘and these tourists would probably be visiting attractions such as the Singapore Flyer too. As a HTM student, it made me realise how such events truly have great social and economic benefits on Singapore. There were also so many people involved on the ground. From the reliable and helpful security to friendly ushers who directed the mad crowds at the live concerts, everyone was working together. It must have not been easy being on their feet for hours but everyone I met was smiling and friendly amidst the crazy crowds. 😊 Being there in person truly brought my classroom lessons alive as I saw its relevance to the real world. From the many stakeholders involved during an event and the importance of understanding guests needs right down to the significance of teamwork and coordination between all parties involved. Huge respect to everyone who made the event possible on our little sunny island and I am immensely grateful for this opportunity. It opened up my mind about our wonderful and exciting industry and I can't wait to play a part in it when I graduate. 🎓 Temasek Polytechnic Temasek Polytechnic | School of Business #Formula1 #SingaporeGrandPrix #F1Singapore #F1nightrace #Singapore #tpbizschool #TPCreatingTomorrow #temasekpoly #tphtm

20 HTM Freshmen and Junior students, together with lecturers Ms Kay Hwee Tay and Ms Selene Goh, embarked on an unforgettable overseas study trip to Hokkaido, Japan during the September semester break. From the serene Lake Shikotsu to the bustling city of Sapporo, our students gained invaluable out-of-classroom experiences. Key highlights include: 🍙Visit to the Yoichi Eco Village, where they took part in beach combing & learnt about sustainable living practices through hands-on activities such as composting & assisting with trimming of grape vines. Everyone also enjoyed a unique farm-to-table lunch using fresh organic produce from the garden. Oishii! 🍙Cross-cultural exchange with students from Hokkaido University where they learnt from Prof. Nishikawa about ‘Historical Prisons as social memory in Hokkaido’, & played a game of chapteh; 🍙Dressed up in kimonos where students and lecturers soaked in the atmosphere, sampled local dishes & appreciated Japanese culture by exploring the Sapporo Autumn Festival at Odori Park; 🍙Took a glimpse of a successful tourist destination by exploring the charming harbour city of Otaru where students compared the similarities/differences to Boat Quay/Clarke Quay. From the picturesque canals to the vibrant atmosphere, Otaru offered a unique wharf tourism experience; 🍙Discovered the Ainu culture at a private museum through song & dance performances. Students gained a deeper appreciation for how cultures ought to be preserved for future generations and its value in tourism. Here are 2 post-trip reflections from Freshman, Cedrick Tan and Junior, Sheeryn Nasyirah: Cedrick – It's so great how Japanese care so much about service through their bowing & waving when we arrived/departed from each hotel. Their service attitude is very warm and this is something that we can learn from them. Despite the language barrier, they still did their best to serve me to the best of their ability, therefore I felt very welcomed throughout the trip. Sheeryn - Design & planning of certain architectures are important factors when attracting tourists. The attractions need to be planned and designed in a way that is convenient, efficient, and unique to attract many tourists to visit. Lake Shikotsu Visitor Centre had really interesting and unique designs which grabbed my attention & made me roam around the room to look at the displays. The way the place was designed made me think about how much time and planning was done to create a beautiful place for both locals & tourists to look at and enjoy. Moving forward, I wish to take what I see as an inspiration for when I am required to design a place to cater to tourists. This Hokkaido adventure was more than just a study trip. It was an immersive learning experience that evoked the 5 senses throughout. New knowledge, friendship & precious memories were forged, and we have no doubt that this trip will remain a core memory for all who were part of it! 😍 #tpcreatingtomorrow #tpbizschool
