  • Ahead of Rare Disease Day on 28th February, Rare Disorders Society (Singapore) recently held a series of events to raise awareness of patients’ journeys, key gaps in access to diagnostics and medicines, and pragmatic ways to ease the burden on patients and caregivers. The Carry Hope 2025 Forum, attended by Dafydd Green and Will Brown, brought together researchers, healthcare professionals, policymakers, and families to discuss key topics and updates with rare disases. Wee Seng PHUA highlighted RDSS’s achievements in raising awareness for a wide range of rare diseases in Singapore and building important links with various stakeholders. Guest of Honour Jasmin Lau then shared the Ministry of Health (Singapore)'s perspective on the challenges of rare disease support while underscoring the need for equity in funding decisions. Inspirational talks were also given by speakers including Yoong Khean Khoo, Saumya Jamuar and Yong Hao Lim, all highlighting the opportunities to advance rare disease diagnosis, care, and advocacy. The following Saturday, members of the #VistaHealth team participated in the Carry Hope Walk and Run—an event that has grown significantly in recent years and helps ensure that rare diseases are no longer a hidden burden in Singapore. The team braved the rain to complete the course and was motivated by the carnival energy and optimism to carry hope. • The 2nd Malaysian Society of Patient Blood Management (MyPBM) (#MyPBM) Scientific Conference recently brought together regional and global experts to create a “Recipe for Optimal Blood Health", the theme of this year’s conference. #VistaHealth attended as sponsor and knowledge partner.  In officially opening the conference, Head of the Ministry Of Health, Malaysia (KKM), YB Datuk Seri Dr. Dzulkefly Ahmad reaffirmed Malaysia’s commitment to supporting the implementation of #PatientBloodManagement (#PBM) through a PBM Task Force established under the Ministry. The PBM Task Force promotes the responsible use of blood transfusions, with the aim of reducing the risk of complications from unnecessary transfusions and potentially saving an estimated 1,250 bags of blood and RM1.25 million each day. Across the three days, distinguished speakers from Australia, India, Japan, South Korea and the United States discussed their experiences in PBM and performing bloodless surgeries across various therapeutic areas. Strategies to achieve this included optimising pre-operative haemoglobin levels, using minimally invasive techniques, and optimising patients’ tolerance to anaemia. The importance of alignment between surgeons and anaesthesiologists was also emphasised, while respecting patients’ choice of treatment. Other key topics included results from a study on the cost-effectiveness of PBM, the forthcoming World Health Organization's (#WHO) guidance on PBM, and the role of innovations such as #ArtificialIntelligence (#AI) and point-of-care testing (#POCT) in PBM implementation. Renowned experts Dr. Aryeh Shander and Sherri Ozawa, MSN, RN also addressed the challenges, ethical considerations, and strategies for optimising PBM and blood health.   The conference also marked the official launch of the first-ever 24-hour Global Anemiathon, led by World Anemia Awareness, which brought together global experts to share insights on #anaemia, iron deficiency, blood health, and PBM practices. Watch this space for a post-conference report by MyPBM and Vista Health!  In the meantime, Vista Health would like to congratulate MyPBM on the success of the conference and extend our heartiest gratitude to all speakers, sponsors and participants. Together, let’s raise our hands for blood health!  #ValueBasedHealthcare #PatientCare #BloodManagement #HealthPolicy

  • February 13th is #WorldAnaemiaAwarenessDay. #Anaemia remains a global health challenge, affecting 1 in 4 people worldwide, with a high prevalence among young children and women of reproductive age. This day aims to educate all on the ideal haemoglobin level, which is above 13g/dL, as these levels are crucial for maintaining optimal blood health. Anaemia is also a major concern in surgical care, with 39% of pre-operative patients affected and up to 90% of post-operative patients experiencing it after major surgery. While blood transfusions are often the default treatment for anaemia, they are not always the most appropriate option and can pose serious risks, including acute respiratory distress syndrome and increased hospital mortality. On this World Anaemia Awareness Day, we emphasise the critical role of #PatientBloodManagement (#PBM) – a patient-centred, systematic, evidence-based approach to improve patient outcomes by managing and preserving patients’ own blood, while promoting patient safety and empowerment. In August 2024, #VistaHealth conducted a survey among the general population in Singapore, Malaysia, and the United Kingdom, revealing significant knowledge gaps regarding blood transfusions, their management and overuse in elective surgeries. Upon learning the facts, many respondents expressed concerns about the increased mortality risk and the frequent occurrence of unnecessary transfusions. Encouragingly, there was a strong willingness among the public to participate in PBM initiatives, especially if it contributed to reducing the risk of prolonged hospital stays. These insights highlight the importance of strengthening PBM implementation and closing existing knowledge gaps to promote safer and more effective blood management practices. Beyond improved patient outcomes, effective PBM can also reduce healthcare costs and enhance operational efficiencies. To learn more about our work in PBM, feel free to contact us at info@vista.health or find us at the 2nd Malaysian Society of Patient Blood Management Scientific Conference (https://lnkd.in/d2x3iA93), taking place in Kuala Lumpur from 13th – 15th February 2025. #healthcare #vistahealth

  • Recently there have been reports of outbreaks of the #HumanMetapneumovirus (#HMPV), raising questions about #PandemicPreparedness globally. Since December 2024, rising hMPV cases in #China and emerging cases in #India and #Malaysia have highlighted the risks to vulnerable populations. Although hMPV typically causes mild symptoms such as cough, fever, and nasal congestion, it can lead to severe respiratory illnesses like bronchitis or pneumonia, particularly in young children, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems (e.g., #cancer and #transplant patients, as well as older adults). The World Health Organization (#WHO) has stated that current hMPV transmission patterns are consistent with typical winter trends and do not indicate an abnormal outbreak. Former WHO Chief Scientist Soumya Swaminathan noted, “[hMPV] is a known virus that causes respiratory infections, mostly mild,” and cases in China are now declining after control measures took effect. Discovered in 2001, hMPV currently has no vaccines or specific antiviral treatments. However, researchers are leveraging knowledge from similar Paramyxoviridae family viruses like #RespiratorySyncitialVirus (#RSV) to develop solutions. Moderna’s ongoing Rhyme Trial (https://lnkd.in/gg3pnDki) is testing an investigational combination #mRNA #vaccine for RSV and hMPV in infants aged 5 to 24 months. This vaccine uses the same mechanism as #COVID-19 mRNA vaccines, instructing the body to produce a protein that targets prefusion F-protein neutralising epitopes, helping the immune system protect against the virus. AstraZeneca’s subsidiary Icosavax is also advancing IVX-A12 to Phase III trials. This RSV and hMPV combination vaccine uses a protein virus-like particle platform and has shown positive Phase II trial results among older adults aged 60 to 85 years. These advancements, though in development, offer a promising step toward mitigating hMPV’s effects across age groups, especially for vulnerable populations. Reflecting on the COVID-19 pandemic, it is unsurprising that rising hMPV cases raise public concern. COVID-19 showed how swiftly outbreaks can strain healthcare systems, underscoring the need for proactive pandemic responses. Advances in #diagnostics like multiplex-PCR panels and vaccine technology offer opportunities to combat infectious diseases like hMPV. Beyond innovation, governments must prioritise public health strategies to reassure communities, prevent panic, and foster trust in resilient health systems. Vista Health is closely monitoring the hMPV situation, offering updates and insights through an infectious disease lens. Follow our page for the latest developments and expert perspectives, or contact info@vista.health to discuss our infectious disease work further.
