One Country, Four Languages. Women in Localization Singapore Chapter wishes #Singapore a Happy National Day on their 59th year as a nation. In a Census of Population 2020 published by the Singapore Department of Statistics, the languages most commonly spoken at home on the island nation is: ▶ English 48.3% ▶ Mandarin 29.9% ▶ Malay 9.2% ▶ Chinese Dialects 8.7% ▶ Tamil 2.5% ▶ Others 1.4% And the language most commonly spoken as a second language at home is: ▶ Mandarin 56.1% ▶ Malay 13.5% ▶ No Second Language 13.2% ▶ Chinese Dialects 7.2% ▶ Tamil 5.1% ▶ Other Indian Languages 2.6% ▶ Others 2.3% Naturally, there are more languages spoken in the country than the four official languages. Even within the same household, there are layers of linguistic diversity to be found. Today, we celebrate Singapore's rich multilingual legacy and its plentiful efforts to embrace, retain and nurture its linguistic ecosphere. #wlsg #language #diversity #womeninlocalization #localization #localisation #l10n

Many Chinese dialects are dying languages. It’s sad but true. And this is not a phenomenon only to be found here in #Singapore. It is happening all around the world to many local dialects, a natural consequence of globalisation. This also means that there is also a dwindling number of linguists who are able to bridge the communication gap between speakers of these traditional tongues. In our latest article on the translation of Chinese dialects in Singapore, we look at the different types of dialect translation projects in Singapore. #dialect #chinesedialect #cantonese #hokkien #teochew #englishtranslation #singaporedialect #singaporetranslation #audiotranscription #singaporestories #singaporelife https://lnkd.in/gtMXsS8x
