South Korea's oceans ministry said on Wednesday it plans to nearly double the size of its marine protected area by 2027 as part of efforts to proactively address climate change. The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries outlined the initiative in a report marking the start of the second half of the Yoon Suk Yeol administration, emphasising the goal of building a sustainable marine ecosystem for future generations. Under the plan, the size of marine protected areas, which currently cover 1.8 per cent of South Korean waters, will be expanded to 3 per cent by the target year. #Asia #SouthKorea #Oceans #Marine #ClimateChange This content is jointly prepared by ZWEEC Analytics Pte Ltd and ripple2wave. Indonesia and Japan on November 12 agreed to start implementing the Mutual Recognition Arrangement (MRA) for the implementation of bilateral carbon trading cooperation between the two countries. Indonesian President’s special envoy to COP 29 UNFCCC Hashim S. Djojohadikusumo affirmed that the Indonesian government is ready to implement the agreement that has been signed with Japan in order to strengthen bilateral carbon commerce collaboration. The MRA agreement is the world's first model of bilateral cooperation between countries within the Paris Agreement framework. Meanwhile, Japan's Vice Minister of Global Environmental Affairs Yutaka Matsuzawa said he was glad to be present at the Indonesia Pavilion to discuss further efforts to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. #Asia #Indonesia #Japan #Bilateral #GHG This content is jointly prepared by ZWEEC Analytics Pte Ltd and ripple2wave. Despite being just a stone's throw from the Sabah Legislative Assembly building, residents of Kampung Kibagu here still rely on well water. This was revealed by PAS-nominated assemblyman Datuk Dr Aliakbar Gulasan during a state assembly sitting. While acknowledging the government's plans and initiatives, he highlighted that basic infrastructure issues persist. He added that Kampung Karambunai and Kampung Salimbangun, also under the jurisdiction of the Kota Kinabalu City Hall, lack proper water supply. #Malaysia #Sabah #WaterInfrasturcture #WaterSupply This content is jointly prepared by ZWEEC Analytics Pte Ltd and ripple2wave. Net Zero is a hot topic at COP29 as we all focus on trying to limit global warming. But is it technically possible? According world-leading scientists, it most certainly is. Euronews spoke with Diana Ürge-Vorsatz, Professor at the Central European University and Vice-Chair at the International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC): "The IPCC has shown that not only is it possible, but there are multiple ways to get to Net Zero. Of course, none of them are easy. However, it is still possible." To reach Net Zero, you have to drive down your energy use as much as possible. And in Europe that means reuse, recycle, repurpose and plant trees. #Europe #NetZero #GlobalWarming #ClimateChange This content is jointly prepared by ZWEEC Analytics Pte Ltd and ripple2wave. It has been an exceptionally bad year for dengue fever: Nearly 12 million cases were recorded in the Americas through October, close to triple last year’s total of 4.6 million. Research being presented at the annual meeting of the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene on Saturday quantifies the role that climate change has played in the trend, attributing nearly a fifth of the existing dengue burden to rising temperatures. By 2050, the research predicts, climate change could be responsible for a 60% increase in the incidence of dengue if emissions continue at pace, with some places — like parts of Peru, Mexico, Bolivia and Brazil — seeing spikes of up to 200%. #USA #ClimateChange #Dengue This content is jointly prepared by ZWEEC Analytics Pte Ltd and ripple2wave. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has announced fresh climate change targets at a global summit, saying he wants the UK to lead on cutting emissions. The UK will now aim for an 81% cut in its emissions by 2035, he told the UN conference of parties (COP29) in Azerbaijan. The new target was based on recommendations from the UK's independent climate change committee (CCC) aimed at limiting global warming to 1.5C compared to levels in 1990, the Prime Minister said. #UK #ClimateChange #GlobalWarning This content is jointly prepared by ZWEEC Analytics Pte Ltd and ripple2wave. New Jersey’s governor issued a drought warning Wednesday and said the state could implement mandatory water restrictions if conditions worsen. A record dry spell has led to the driest conditions New Jersey has had in nearly 120 years, prompting a staggering increase in the number of wildfires, state officials said at a news conference. The New Jersey Forest Fire Service has responded to 537 blazes since early October, which have burned thousands of acres, Gov. Phil Murphy said. That’s 500 more fires than during the same period last year, he said. He urged residents to take the drought warning seriously and reduce water use voluntarily. #USA #NewJersey #Drought This content is jointly prepared by ZWEEC Analytics Pte Ltd and ripple2wave.
