I have been a movie buff all my life. To the point, that my significant half says that I can watch anything on screen (of course, at her constant annoyance for decades). Last week, I did a marathon run again of the Bourne series for the umpteenth time. Fast paced, brilliant camera work, good storylines, excellent casting (you can identify a lot of the "asset" cameos, who became big stars later) and follow ups etc. etc. During the third instalment, The Bourne Ultimatum, I came across this poignant statement in the end scene. Seems like something straight out of a Dilbert cartoon strip, teaching the most valuable corporate / leadership / management lesson in one sentence. If only we could develop every individual within our teams to ensure that they understood the reasons and repercussions of every action performed through the day, we could do away with significant amount of waste in the performance chain. A lot of measurement and analyses, without ever questioning the value add of these activities to the end customer. Sounds familiar? :-)

Nearly half a million containers are waiting at the Port of Singapore The world’s second-largest container port is experiencing delays of up to seven days. Container volumes are piling up at the Port of Singapore to such an extent that it has become critical, according to Linerlytica’s latest report. The congestion is so bad that ships with a total capacity of up to 450,000 teu are queuing to berth. The analyst firm estimates the queue time to be up to seven days. The congestion has forced some shipping lines to cancel their scheduled port calls in Singapore, which will exacerbate the problem at the ports that the ships will go directly to instead, as they will have to handle the extra container volumes. Since November, the conflict in the Red Sea has impacted key ports in Asia and Europe due to significant changes in ships’ sailing schedules, putting pressure on the supply chain.

Southeast Asia, in particular, emerges as a preferred omnisourcing destination, due to its economic partnerships with both the U.S. and China. Seasoned in manufacturing, ASEAN economies offer valuable skills, capacity, and expertise at competitive rates. The region is also politically stable and part of multiple multilateral trade treaties, like the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), which aims to remove tariffs on 90 percent of goods traded between ASEAN member countries over the next 20 years. Companies reshoring to Southeast Asia can thus enjoy the benefits of integrated supply chains, while gaining easier access to higher-cost markets like Japan and South Korea, as well as the large consumer bases in fast-growing economies like Malaysia and Indonesia. Malaysia is heavily invested in electronics manufacturing, taking on the role of back-end producer, focusing on the manufacturing and assembly of semiconductors for consumer parts and consumer electronic products. As Malaysia’s base of technology or electronics manufacturing activities, Penang hosts a strong network of over 3,000 diversified and competent local suppliers covering automation, electronics, packaging, plastics, precision engineering and metal work, and software development, among others.

The year-end warehouse rush in Singapore is like Orchard Road during a Christmas sale—non-stop madness. To get through it without the team burning out, you’ve got to keep them motivated and in good spirits. Here’s how I’d handle it: 1. Keep It Real Sit the team down for a quick chat (with kopi, of course) and explain why this rush is such a big deal. When they know their effort actually makes a difference, they’re more likely to step up. 2. Give Them a Reason to Push Nobody wants to work late just because. Throw in some extra perks—bonuses, NTUC vouchers, or even extra leave days once the rush is over. A little incentive goes a long way. 3. Work Smart, Not Just Hard Make things less siong for everyone. Spread out the shifts, bring in some extra help (part-timers or temps), and make sure all the tools and machines are working properly. No point slogging if things aren’t running smoothly. 4. Make It Fun Break up the grind with little treats—bubble tea, prata for supper, or even a quick laugh in between orders. When people feel cared for, they’ll put in the extra effort without feeling so jialat. 5. Celebrate the Wins Hit a target? Let the team know they smashed it! Give shoutouts, buy a round of kopi, or hand out small rewards. It doesn’t have to be fancy—just something to keep the energy up. 6. Show Face Don’t just sit in your office like a tai-tai; get on the floor with the team. Help out where you can, solve problems quickly, and show you’re in the trenches with them. It’s the fastest way to earn respect. At the end of the day, it’s all about showing the team you’re in this together. With some kampong spirit, a few extra perks, and good vibes, they’ll power through the rush like pros.

For those interested in the current status of port congestion at the Port of Singapore, PSA International has issued an official press release. The average vessel waiting time has been reduced to 2 days or less. This is excellent news. Well done to PSA Singapore, one of the world's most efficient transhipment hubs. Quote PSA Singapore (PSA), a major global transhipment hub, has significantly enhanced its capabilities to support increased activity and mitigate the impact of global supply chain disruptions since the beginning of 2024. This includes bolstering its frontline capacity, commissioning new berths at Tuas Port, and reactivating berths and yard space at Keppel Terminal. As a result, the average wait time at the port in recent weeks has been reduced to two days or less. Keynotes to Myself @ 8Nov2024 : "Make Shipping Great Again!" In the wise words of a great (and now historical) re-elected figure: Never say die. So, here we are again, pushing the boundaries of shipping knowledge, just like my NTU final-year students in the picture below. This was us, late at night at PSA KFC outlet - prepping for their final presentation — the one that impacts their graduation fate. And believe me, it was a “Make It or Break It” kind of moment. Lessons Learnt When Pushing for Critical Datelines (or What i learnt from the USA 2024 Elections)... #1 - Never Say Die – Fight, Fight, Fight! Just like Donald Trump’s campaign, when it feels like you’re against the odds, don’t back down. Whether it’s preparing for a final-year presentation or launching a new online course (ahem "Shipping for Non-Shipping Executives"), grit is key. The crowd may doubt you, but remember, even the best ships face rough seas before docking triumphantly. #2 - Paid Celebrity Endorsements Don’t Count It’s not about who endorses you; it’s about who believes in you. My NTU students here? They didn’t need fancy endorsements; they had hard work, late nights, and lots of coffee (plus a sprinkle of my wisdom, 😎of course). #3 - Don’t Listen to the Crowd (Polls) – Just Answer the Questions. In shipping (and life), everyone has an opinion. But when you’re up there presenting your project, or when I’m delivering my course, there’s only one thing that matters: Do you know your stuff? ASIA - CONGESTION PROBLEMS IN THE HUB PORTS Singapore, the world’s largest transshipment hub, has become an epicenter of disruption in the Far East but the port congestion toxicity has now spread to neighboring Malaysian hubs with Port Klang recording all-time-high congestion on 1 July. Volumes at Tanjung Pelepas are reportedly up by 20% this year also, however MMC and APM Terminals, which run the port, have claimed the 1.078 million TEU in May 2024 was handled without any congestion. The congestion in global supply chains is understandable in many respects because carriers have tried to reduce the impact of longer sailing distances around the Cape of Good Hope by stopping at fewer ports - but they almost all still stop at Singapore (or nearby). Is warehouse automation for everyone?

While we are still far from the spot pricing seen during the pandemic, the recent spike has shippers worried. But what is behind this spike in pricing? One key driver is the congestion at ports around the world that are seeing increases in volumes due to the Red Sea crisis. For example: Singapore's container volume is up 8.8% YoY as shippers offload more containers to avoid future stops and speed up transit times. This increases the dwell time of ships in the port and is creating a large queue of vessels outside the port. Adding to the congestion for global ports, vessels originally schedule for Singapore are bypassing it for other downstream ports. By skipping the port, they are creating additional imbalance for equipment and offload times, exacerbating port congestion. According to Linerlytica- port congestion has tied up 2M TEU of ships, nearly 7% of the fleet, which is lending support to carrier rate hikes.
